There are little gnatty type flying bugs on my screens, on my windows, and flying around for the last couple of days.
There are dead bodies of those little gnatty things lying around my front door. Yuck. |

They are called 'love bugs.' This is their time of year. And, nobody 'loves' them !

University of Florida information about love bugs. Did you know there was an urban legend that researchers at the Florida State University manufactured love bugs to kill mosquitos? It isn't true, but just shows another example of urban legends. Info from the UFL website even addresses the legend. Just thought that was sorta funny.

Nope. Don't let this blond hair fool ya. I know a love bug. (Little oversexed devils.) These are gnatty looking critters.

That's funny, BK (about the urban legend). Did you know that Georgia Tech engineers did an exhaustive 50-year study and finally proved why the chicken crossed the road!! It was to prove to the possum that it could be done. ![]() |

Gracie.... These are the same midgies, or blind mosquitoes, that KathieI and I were complaining about last summer. They do not bite, but they buzz around and stink like fish if you smash them.
I live in Amelia, backing to a retention pond, and my house is COVERED with them. There must be millions of them (and I am NOT exaggerating) all over the eaves, my garage door, my screens, and I cannot walk out of my house without being attacked by them. When I came home from work last night and pulled into my garage and closed the door with my remote, I got out of the car and I could hear them buzzing. I turned on the overhead light, and to my horror, there were probably 1/2 million of them @#$%& things on the ceiling and walls of my garage. My guess is that they got sucked into the garage when the door went up, and now they were trapped. This morning, half of them are dead on the floor, and I'm just waiting for the other half to croak. When I called the District Property Mgmt offices @ 751-6713 last year, they said Sumter county was responsible for spraying. So, I called them @ 793-0240, and they said that they spray regularly for mosquitoes. But, I never heard the truck come around, nor did I see them at the pond. I will call Monday morning and get on them again, as this infestation is ridiculously out-of-control. |

Yes, krash, they are already back this year and bigger than last year. All my neighbors are complaining and they don't all live near a pond. This is just awful and exasperating. They are larger this year and very green in color. Disgusting!! This morning a huge amount of them were dead on the outside of my screen door for no reason, I didn't spray them so I have no clue what happened.
BTW, the bad news is..... I saw my first love bug(s) this morning... OMG, this is going to be a buggy season. I thought the freeze would help us but apparently there was no negative effect on these midgies... EWWWWWW. Do you think if we band together, we might be able to get village management to spray for these?

Yeah, they are greenish, long and skinny. We went to Habenero's last night in Leesburg and when we came out the car was covered with them. Some of them (dead) are plastered to the car today.

These bugs are a new strain of "Villatelliga Insectisidea" they come out only when the Villages has a new promotion at one of the town squares.

Next time you see one of those people with a roll of paper towels at your door, see if you can hire them to swat the blind mosquitos with the paper towel roll and clean up the mess. I'm sorry, forgive me. I couldn't resist. LOL
