The glass bottom boats are fun if the weather is good. And sometimes SS has great entertainers and you can hear them as you walk around the grounds. Your grands would also like the live animals: giraffes that you can feed and bears.

If you can make only one trip I think Homosassa Springs has much more appeal for kids -- short boat ride to the park, with manatees (with underwater viewing), all the birds of Florida and many native animals, plus a "native" hippopotamus. See http://www.floridastateparks.org/hom...gs/default.cfm

Go to their web page---you will find out everything you need to know. Neighbors have 4 grandchildren visiting--decided to go there tomorrow for the day. There is a coupon on their web page---one adult gets in free with paid adult----Sounds like lots of things to do there---animals, boats, etc.

I think that for their ages that Silver Springs is great. Much better that Disney (for their age) much better than Homosassa Springs ,my opinion, and closer. Have been to all. Be sure and go up Baseline Road off of 441/27 and it will take you right into Silver Springs. Fastest way from The Villages.
The first visit for kids that age should be the Wilderness Trail and ride the Jeeps in the Ocala National Forest, go past the boat rides and directly to the Wildnress Trai,l then go to the zoo area. Then if the kids have any energy left go to the boat rides. Also walk them to see the gators lots of them. This area is to the right as you enter. But go to the Safari ride for thir ages and yours you will enjoy. This is where they filmed several Tarzan movies. After you are inside you can decide if you enjoy it and you can purchase a year pass for very little more than you paid to get in. If you have other grandkids that come down you can take them and not pay your own way in. Also will get you into the great shows that they have there. (Check out website) Great Deal! Or if your Grandkids come back before a year is up they will want to go back. Website below. A must for grandkids that are below the age to appreciate the Orlando attractions. Go in the AM and by noon they will be ready for a nap with you. Again just my opinion. http://www.silversprings.com/rides.html

We went there last summer. I had memories of Silver Springs when I was a child. The area was a lot more active back then. From that perspective it was a dissappointment. The posted prices at the box office are very high. At half price it becomes reasonable. We didn't have a coupon so we began to walk away even though we had already paid for parking. That's when they called us back and gave us a 2 for 1 ticket. I would say that it is something everyone in the area should see once. I'm sure we are not going back.

At one time many of the motels in the area of Silver Springs had discount coupons. It may be worth a try to stop at one of the motels and ask.

Just a word of caution here. The Wilderness Trail ride at Silver Springs is an extremely rough ride in a tram pulled by a Jeep through a pot hole littered dusty road at the back of the park. The tram has hard wooden bench seats without cushions or padding. At times I was being tossed in the air and getting banged around severly. It was not at all enjoyable and I do not recommend it for seniors or small children.

We took our 10 yr old grandaughter there about 2 months ago and she really enjoyed it.
There are 3 differant glass bottom rides there that are all included in the price. We were able to buy 1 and get 1 free on the tickets and you can call them and ask what specials there are. If you enjoy nature and want to see lots and lots of alligators then this is a nice place to visit. It is also educational. |
