Default U.S. poised to lose Manufacturing Crown?

I'm guessing some people already know this, but I was under the mistaken belief that the U.S. had already lost this crown some time ago. It seemed to me almost everyone thought everything is made in China and we produce little here. Turns out I was mistaken and even with far less population we still out-produce China; although, apparently, not for long.

Sorry, it seems I can't link this story from the Financial Times. If you look up the story heading in Google, though, you'll find it and be able to read it without subscription.

I found another, though shorter story on this.

I'm ashamed to say what surprised me the most about the story is that the US is now, and has held, the crown. My lapse and laziness in thinking for myself led me to believe what I'd been reading and hearing in the main stream media that we haven't been number 1 in factory production for sometime now.
