Default Garage door spring broke today

After moving into our brand new house 9 1/2 yrs ago---one of our garage door springs broke--heard a large bang , the spring broke into 2 pieces--could not raise the door--lucky for us our garage man got to us in 30 minutes, replaced two springs

Will replace springs every 8 yrs from now on--according to our garage door man--the new springs-don't last that long any more compared to the ones that were used 30 yrs ago

Oh Yeah, Ryan is a great guy and very fair. When we called him it was like he was waiting in a Phone Booth around the corner. He was here quickly. The repair of the Torsion Spring is best left to a Professional Repairman like Ryan. I found that out the hard way years ago.

The Torsion Spring is the one along the top of the Garage Door. I wouldn't think of trying that myself. Very dangerous for a rookie. The set of Extension Springs that have one on each side are not to bad to handle on your own but for what Ryan charges its better to just give him a call for either of them. 352-207-5668.

Glad things worked out for you.

I run a small bead of machine oil along the top of the spring once a year. Haven't replaced a spring in 40 years.

You've lived in The Villages for 40 years?

The new springs are not the quality of the old springs--I lube my springs once a year, still broke

Depends on how many times they are cycled. I have mine changed when the break. I surprised mine don’t break more often due constantly raising and lower the garage every day.

Nothing seems to be the same quality anymore.

First job out of navy in the 70's was installing garage doors. Those springs can be dangerous without the right size winding bars.

Garage door springs typically break right around at the 10 year mark for most folks. Always replace in pairs. Ryan O'Cull is one of the very best. Always recommend him. Frank D.
