Hi everybody,

This is my first posting this year and I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly but here goes. My wife and I are renting a 3 br. Amarillo for the month and were just settling in when we got our first visitor, a small (1.5-2.0 inch) scorpion. Just a few days later and there appeared a 2 foot long black snake in the garage, we're wondering when to expect the alligator in our drive. We flushed the scopion and released the snake which had its head stuck on a insect stickey strip. I would expect the ocassional snake encounter but my question to all of you full time residents is has anyone ever come accross a scorpion before and are they common in this area. We are having trouble sleeping at night with one eye open and need some feedback regarding the scorpion. Thanks.

Right after we bought our house we had a similar scorpion in the house. Once our 'pest management' was brought up to snuff, only 1 more on the lanai in 4 years and it was dead.

Snakes in garages are not all that uncommon and not much you can do for that except keep the garage door closed.

I'd contact your landlord regarding the scorpion!

Don't know if this applies to scorpions or not, but we were told to put screens on the roof vents to prevent creepy crawlies from entering the house that route. Seems there are roof frogs, little snakes and other cuties that may want to see your interior decorating.

In 4 years, I've found one in my house, a very squashed dead one. It was near the front door so it might have been brought in on the bottom of someone's shoe.

Does make one pay attention, doesn't it! Just take care....check your shoes before you put them on, check the bed before getting in. From what I've read, they seem to show up around new construction areas here. Not sure if you're in a newer home or not.

Have fun while you're here, don't worry too much about the bugs. If you're really uncomfortable, let the homeowner know. They can notify their pest control company and have them out to spray.

We have been here 10 years and have only had one snake pay a visit. I found it when I opened my water pit to fix a sprinkler. After opening the lid I called my wife to get the snake!!! She didn't.

I don't know if it would work for scorpions; but the Riddux (this is the brand name) devices, sold on TV and on the internet, have worked great for us. We had seen occasional palmetto bugs and small spiders in our villa; and we had had some mice in our garage. (You'd have to know me . . there are not alot of things that I am afraid of; however, having any bugs or spiders of any sort, and definitely a mouse or snake being in the house - or even the garage - is a definite 'no no!!' in order for me to be able to continue living there; and the post about a scorpion being found in a home here in TV transported me to a previously unknown level of anxiety!) The Riddux device is only guaranteed by the manufacturer to get rid of mice and roaches; but we have not seen any palmetto bugs, spiders, or mice around at all - not even one! - since we got these devices about a year ago. We got two of the devices and put one in the garage and one in our guest bathroom, which is about mid-way the length of our villa; so since we haven't seen any spiders since, I don' know, but it might work for scorpions, too, even though they are not a spider (I think - right?). I just know that I would never be without the Riddux devices again; and I definitely prefer these devices over having pesticide chemicals sprayed in my home. The devices send out a signal which is inaudible to humans, but which apparently affects the nervous system of mice, etc, deterring them from entering the area where the signal is present.

Freeda - do you have any pets? Are dogs affected by the devices? We have 2 dogs and don't want anything that would bother them.

Hi, Greg, no I don't have any pets; if I did, though, I'd check with my vet and with the Riddux company; and do my own research online, etc.
