Default Things to know

This morning I call about a couple of solar fans put in my attic and found out if you live in Sumter county you need a permit ( 65.00 ), what a joke, if you live in Lake county you don't need one.

Interesting. I have had 4 installed and do not know of any permit. Now maybe the installer (solar guys) got the permit and just added that to the price of the fan, but if so they never told me that.

Who did you hire to install them?

Also had a solar heater installed for the pool and there was no permit that I was aware of unless it was in the price.

I think most of the deed restrictions are there for the just in case someone does something really dumb like painting their house pink with white pok e dots.

If you add a plant to the landscape and it looks good, you will be OK. You can check with the restrictions folks and submit after the fact if you are unclear or they instruct you to do so. Checking with them first could save you some removal money, but you will not go to prison in either case.

Same thing here. I had two installed this spring and I didn't have to do the permit. You are correct it may have been payed for by Solar Guys. They were doing my neighbors house and I asked if they could do mine. They were done in less than half an hour. Very pleased

Default Permit

I think this is either a new requirement or increased enforcement of an existing one. We had solar tubes installed shortly after we moved in and there was no permit required. Others in our village have had them installed recently and there was a permit requirement. Sumter County only.

It is a new requirement in Sumter is what I was told by Solar Guys.
I had to have a permit pulled for my 3 solar tubes and the fan. They pulled the permit for me. Was not a big deal.

This just started about a year ago. Until then no permit was required in Sumter County.
They probably just include it in on the price of the job now.

Just a question, If you paid for a permit, did the county send out an inspector?

Yes. We paid for a permit for our solar tubes (Sumter County). The County sent out an inspector.

$65 seems high. Maybe they have implememented new fees to help balance the budget without raising property taxes?

Is the $65 per tube or fan or for the entire job. If that's per tube, that's pretty steep. On the other hand, if you're having 2 or 3 tubes and a fan or two installed, it's pretty reasonable, if it's for the entire job.

$65 for the whole job.

The inspector came, looked at the building permit in the window, and left.

Default Permit

Recently had 2 additional tubes installed and needed permits, and the inspector came out and signed off. The previous work required no permits. Everbody wants a little piece of the action I guess.
