Dignity: of Earth & Sky | Travel South Dakota

Would like to travel to South Dakota at some point. One of the states I have not been to yet. And this looks like something worthwhile to see.

Have not been to Alaska, Hawaii, Vermont, South Carolina, South Dakota, Georgia, but am not sure about Maine, Delaware, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Connecticut. Depends on the routes we took going back and forth from the Milwaukee area to Cape Cod back in the 1960s. Think we did go through Rhode Island when went to see Gettysburg on the way to the Cape and up through Niagara Falls on way back.

Mount Rushmore took my breath away! I also enjoyed seeing the badlands. Very nice people in South Dakota.

It does look like it would be an interesting thing to visit if you get up that way. A friend visited SD many years ago in a rented motorhome & stopped at several of the well known attractions like Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse monument & The Badlands. He said it was definitely a trip worth taking.

Although South Dakota hasn't been affected nearly as much as North Dakota from the recent oil boom, the entire region has changed substantially from even 10 years ago. There is still some beautiful country to explore though.

My older brother and his wife went to Sturgis around the time of their motorcycle event. They also saw Mt. Rushmore.

South Dakota is a beautiful state, from Mt. Rushmore, to the Badlands, and the town of Deadwood. I've been to S. Dakota twice, and would do it again in a heartbeat.
Vermont is a beautiful, charming state. You won't find a single billboard along any of the roads and highways.

It seems that there are some beautiful parts of the country you haven’t yet explored. Some states, like Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine, are beautiful nearly everywhere just driving through, but especially if you get off the freeways and explore a little. Some on your list, like New Jersey and Rhode Island, can give you a bad impression if you just stay on I-95 and think you’ve seen them or just use Newark Airport while traveling. Rhode Island, though small, has some lovely areas. New Jersey? I’ve spent weekends for ten years in New Jersey near Trump’s golf course, involved with horses and fox hunting. It’s one of the most beautiful parts of the country, and a very different world from Newark and Jersey City. It’s filled with mountains, trees, fields, flowers. As for South Dakota, it has some very beautiful places, mostly around the western edge. Most of the state is flat and miles of corn, wheat, soybeans, or prairie. Like much of Nebraska. I find that beautiful, but lots of people find it boring. As for American Indians, unless you go to a reservation, chances are that metal one at a rest stop in your link is the only one you’ll see. Instead, go there to see real Dakota farm families in real pickup trucks who live on real farms and shop in real American towns and WalMarts. Enjoy their exotic Scandinavian, German, Ukrainian, and Russian faces and traditions and accents. This is an amazing country, but so much of it doesn’t reveal itself if you stick to the freeways. A lot of it is more “a good place to be” than “a good place to visit.” Some is more “a good place to have left.”

South Dakota is definitely a trip worth taking, but it is a hike from here. My wife and I visited last summer, making the trip from our previous home in Kansas City. We made the journey on our motorcycle, which is an excellent way to enjoy all of the scenery. Photographs certainly do not do justice to all of the natural, and man-made, wonders in the State. Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse (which I doubt will ever be completed), the Black Hills, the Badlands, an easy drive to Devil's Tower in Wyoming...so much to see and do. You can spend days just in the Black Hills (we did), and not see/do everything. Iron Mountain Road, Needles Highway, Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, the monuments, etc. Keep in mind though...if you go the first two weeks in August, that is rally time in Sturgis. The entire Black Hills area will be very crowded, and lodging prices are about double what they are in non-rally times.

They love their tourists in South Dakota. Super friendly people, and very accommodating. I would go back in a heartbeat, but doubt that I would ride the motorcycle from Florida! The state should be on your bucket list.

We started our married life in Sioux Falls as college students. That was 56 (or a bit over counting our 'single' life) years ago. It was a lovely city then....the largest in a 4 state area, we were told. But only a bit over 100k then so it should have grown by now. I do know that folks from N.W. Iowa and S.W. Minnesota will travel there for medical reasons. We'd have stayed upon graduation but their wages were low. We visited a couple of times after leaving in the early 70's but haven't been back since. Traveling west is an experience for sure. The country-side goes from rolling to quite flat. Be sure to stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell just to say you've see it. The western edge of the state is beautiful with the Black Hills.

Have been to Oklahoma as my mother's father was from there and we had visited some great aunts in Oklahoma on the way to Reno in 1969.

But it looks like I have also not been to Nebraska which is just next to South Dakota.

Love trains and I hope one goes up that way. I saw North Dakota, Montana, Washington State, and Oregon from a train in 1988 that was coming from the Twin Cities.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally 2021 - Concerts, Music Festival

The Sturgis Rally of 2020 was a good example of what NOT to do in a Pandemic. That was a "bucket list" destination that LITERALLY caused people to kick the bucket. A rally in 2021 would probably be somewhat safer. I will never go to that city just because of the city's greed for NOT canceling the 2020 event for the good of the country.
