Default Comfort Food

Since I've spent the last 5 days in bed with the cold/cough from hell, it made me wonder what others consider their 'comfort foods' - you know - those special foods that you really want when you are sick.

For me it's usually spaghetti - easy to make a batch and warm up a little at a time with butter. Then when I'm feeling better and maybe a little stronger I can add sauce and maybe meatballs.

Hot lemonade; Campbell's tomato soup. It's what my mom always gave me when I was sick. I was known to pretend to have a sore throat just to get the lemonade -- she wouldn't make it for me unless ill (was afraid it wouldn't work if I had it too often). I did switch it somewhat for my daughter -- hot lemonade and home-made chicken soup, but I still have to have tomato soup when I have the sniffles.

So sorry you've been ill. Hope you're feeling much better today.

Scrambled eggs and toast make me feel better when I've been ill.....as an adult. When I was a child, Campbell Chicken Noodle Soup with Saltines that had a little butter on them....and a hot cup of tea.....then of course, there was Vicks....have to add that to the mix....it helped and the aroma of it with the hot chicken soup....lol...well, it helped.

When I was little: Campbell's Bean with Bacon Soup.

Now? Maybe brownies or chocolate chip cookies.

Is that progress? I don't think so . . .

1.Chicken Noodle Soup is supposed to have a medicinal value. I like to add saltines if stomach is still upset.
2.Toast with tea and honey if throat is sore.
3. When the stomach is not an issue, I would prefer pasta as a comfort food.
4. Another comfort food would be meatloaf with mashed pototoes but I tend not to think of food of this nature when ill.

The old tale of "feed a cold and starve a fever" is not true as my doctor once told me that when sick, (fever or cold), one is to take plenty of fluids and bed rest.

Hope you feel better soon!

Sopa de Pollo con Fideos! Which is a Spanish chicken soup, my mother made this for me when I was feeling sick along with a grilled cheese sandwich, always made me feel better.

Things given to me when I was a child.

Tea and Toast, prescribed my our doctor who came to our house.
The tea was weak and with a lot of milk and sugar.

AND something called baby eggs. Poached eggs broken onto buttered bread torn into pieces. (People wouldn't give that to a little one now because of the uncooked yolk ) Also eggnogg made with raw egg. (Didn't seem to harm us)

Now...if I can get someone to heat some chicken noodle soup I always feel much better. It is the bringing it to you that does it.
