We are closing on our new home mid-June and I am looking for recommendations on reasonable moving companies. Also, who do you recommend for homeowners insurance? The good, the bad, and the ugly, its all appreciated.

Far as moving companies. It is far different depending on distance. Inter state moving is usually government regulated. Reasonable, that means different things to different people. I would suggest an internet search of issues. There are some real crooks out there.

Packing. Beware, when your stuff is delivered it will not be in order. The movers typically put their numbers on each box. You will or should use your own number system. I would photograph each item and how it is packed. Your ceramic statue from grandma. Assuming it is broke or the box is lost, you will need proof, you had it packed it well and it was not broken.

I would seriously consider paying for replacement insurance. The included insurance is like fifteen cents a hundred pounds. Assuming you are moving a couch. It weighs say 100 pounds obviously you cannot buy a couch for fifteen cents.

We used a major interstate moving company. Claims, we use only company people.
On both ends, not the same people. The crews were nice but had no idea what they were doing. My armoire, sort of like a china closet for clothes. Like a china closet it is a big piece of furniture. Leaving our sold home, I got it painted etc before selling.
The crew did not know to take it apart. They tried to carry it down the stairs damaging the walls, the handrails and of course the furniture. Different crew in Florida. They crashed it into our NEW wall, punching a hole in the wall roughly a foot in diameter.

I would photograph everything. Including the property you are vacating and DEMAND a final bill for such things as water and electricity.

the moving company is all based on where you're coming from, so I have no comment on that.....but, give Triple A a shot on the insurance quotes that you get once you're down in TV...we found them to be attractive when we bundled the house and the auto

that said...I shop around every year

I used UPack- a semi trailer that you pack and unpack yourself (with hired help if needed) and your contents are locked by you with your own locks behind a bulkhead. Around $500 for 3/4 of a 25 ft trailer from the midwest-1000 miles. My stuff was never taken off and reloaded or stored like the big national carriers do. Very nice company that didn't fuss when I changed my move date twice.

Agree that its best to downsize before you move, but selling all your furniture and hoping to buy new here can be risky-I just this week received a leather chair I ordered 6 months ago. That's a long time to sleep on a blow up mattress.

I went to the Villages insurance and they advised me the current best rates and we settled on Progressive for home, auto and golf cart. Maybe I could save a little shopping around, and maybe I'm lazy but I find it hard to read all the fine print in the policies.

Used village movers last year. Their truck leaked & due to rain our furniture was wet. They also didn't wrap furniture & damaged, scratched wood furniture.

We used Always Faithful Moving 352-442-8342. They are located in Brooksville, FL and moved us from Illinois. They were careful, nice, helpful, kind, didn’t damage walls, or furniture. They drove door to door. No offloading. They are Veteran owned.

As for homeowners' insurance, we use Progressive, bundled with the cars and golf cart.

Interesting thing about interstate movers. When we moved turned out we hired the driver only.

He reaches out and hired two guys to do the loading who were excellent.

Gets to Florida and two new guys not so good. They managed to break some stuff and very sneakily hid the damage which was only seen weeks later.

Be careful with homeowners insurance. Many insurance companies are requiring a new roof before they will take you on.

We relocated last month to TV to a furnished rental where we planned to stay while searching for a new home to purchase which we put a deposit on a new home in St John the 2nd day we were here and close on it a week from today. We used PODS and used a local R.I. company to pack it, and we met a mover that delivered some items we purchased from Bargains and Treasures and will hire him to help with the unpacking of our PODS. We were Allstate customers for many years in R.I. so we stayed with them and they gave us what we think is a competitive price for a bundle for home, car, and golf cart insurance which includes catastrophic ground collapse and sink hole coverage. Our house is new so no concerns regarding roof coverage

I had a couple of really bad experiences with Allstate, both involving my roof here in TN. First one was we had a severe hail storm, all my neighbors and I had roof inspections, we were all told we had hail damage, so I called Allstate to file a claim, they sent out their inspector who found no damage to my roof...every single home on my street had their roof replaced (with various insurance companies) except for me. Then I switched to State Farm (they had better rates) and I was happy with them, my old Allstate agent contacted me and offered me an amazing rate to lure me back and I took the bait, cancelled State Farm and went back to Allstate...then one day I was balancing my checking account and noticed I had a higher than normal balance...ALLSTATE CANCELLED MY INSURANCE WITHOUT EVEN NOTIFYING ME and refunded all the money I had paid (when I called they said my roof was too damaged and too old, funny that it was in perfect condition just a year or two before after that hail storm when they would have had to pay to replace it and we hadn't had any weather issues since that time). It was too late to go back to State Farm, the grace period had expired by a couple of days when I saw the cancellation so I tried scrambling around looking for coverage and found out that Allstate had decided my roof was bad and too old to be covered by insurance and essentially got me blackballed from getting ANY insurance with any company! So I called Allstate and they were "so nice", and offered to make sure I had coverage...and all I had to do was pay FOUR TIMES as much for coverage using their sister company! I refused to do that so I got on my knees and begged my old State Farm agent to help me, which he did, he gave me coverage for everything excluding the roof, nobody else would even do that, and I scrambled and had a new roof put on and State Farm immediately gave me full coverage at the original rate I had before Allstate tricked me into leaving them. I WILL NEVER USE ALLSTATE FOR ANYTHING AFTER THAT EXPERIENCE. Granted it was in TN, but if TN does business like that I don't have confidence other states would treat customers any differently...that was a dirty trick they pulled on me.
