Default Despicable Behavior

I am sure you all of you have heard of Westboro Baptist Church and what they do at funerals of fallen soldiers etc. Tomorrow, they are going to protest at the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards here in Raleigh, NC. Whether you believe in her politics or not, this is despicable behavior. The people here in Raleigh are going to mount a massive counterprotest to them. A local radio station here has some information posted regarding the flyer they put out advertising their protest and an interview with their representative. Having a wife who has battled breast cancer twice, I am deeply offended by this group protesting Elizabeth Edward's funeral as well as the other protests they do.

There are always those who will do things in the "name" of Christianity who are waaaayyyy off base. They interpret the Bible in ways to fit their adjendas rather than how God really meant it to be. Think of the inquistion and the conquests into the middle east by the British back a few centuries. Think they all did more harm than good (to put it lightly). There always will be "Christians" who give Christians a bad name. In my opinion this church isn't doing any Earthly good!!!! Believe me, they will be held accountible at some future time for what they are doing!

Hopefully the normal people of the Raleigh area will all band together to stand as a firewall all around the funeral church, so that these tools of the devil cannot get close and they will give up and leave. This happened in Missouri recently, at a soldier's funeral.

I read what they wrote but for the life of me I can't see what they THINK it is that this fine woman did wrong.

I can't see how anyone would follow such hateful teachings. It smears the Baptist church and all Christians.

Oh...I hope that the good people around there will try to somehow combat this horrible behavior.

I swear, I think I have heard everything and than you hear something like this.

There is enough trouble in the world without making more.

That is a very evil group that hides behind the name of Christianity. Hopefully they will be ignored until another time and no other group tries a counter-demonstration at the funeral.
Rest in peace Ms Edwards. You fought a good fight.

These people are no different than any other other religious zealots who think anything they do in the name of their misguided beliefs is appropriate.

Some other religions come to mind also.

I just can't imagine the mindset of the people who participate in these types of demonstrations. They obviously are not normal === if they have ever experienced loss of a loved one, they would know that this is so wrong. Nothing that they have to say can make this behaviour acceptable.

Last fall we attended a counter rally across the highway from the WBC demonstration at(of all the places) a Maryland high school.
The wife of the WBC was leading the group and Though the rally was over 200 compared to their 10, they were equipped with loud bullhorns.
The most effective drown out was a small group of 4 motorcycles that drove back and forth.
We have since joined the Patriot Guard Riders, and though we have motorcycles, you can join if you don't.
It's free bit we made a donation.
They send out emails with news and updates.

The WBC is a "for profit" (not "for prophet") organization.
They do it for the money. Their intent is to offend, get assaulted or interfered with so that they can sue. They are a litigation business. These people are opportunists, not religious zealots and their goal is the settlements or judgments to be awarded after their provocations.
I read that they are basically a family group (not a public church congregation) and that the family includes 12 lawyers, which would explain a lot. If I can find that article, I will post a link.

You are right about the publicity. I used to live near Topeka and went to church at the First Lutheran ELCA Church in Topeka. The fine doobs of Westboro Baptist spent many of their Sunday mornings picketing our church, rather than going to their own, because our congregation was open to gays. They are publicity hounds who have been known to harass people when they confront them. The church is mostly made up on one extended family, the Fred Phelps clan. Phelps is a disbarred lawyer, and one of his daughters is a practicing attorney who has refined the art of tying up anyone trying to block them in litigation. They picket around Topeka almost daily and unfortunately have become almost a common sight. Read more about these dweebs if you care to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westboro_Baptist_Church

I am a member of the Patriot Guard Riders. Attended a funeral of a war hero down near Tampa. The WBC fanatics were there but Hillsborough P.D. routed the funeral procession away from them. Couldn't hear their bullhorn over the roar of 75+ motorcycles.

Kayaker, and Herr Weissenbach, after reading your posts I am even madder.

Some things just cry to heaven for vengence!

Somehow, someway, in some manner they need to be stopped!
