When I was working overseas I had Email problems with my US cable provider. My wife and I then switched to Gmail Accounts which worked fine. Although we still had our cable email we notified all our important contacts of our change and to try to use the Gmail accounts. It takes a while but worth it in the long end. When we got back to US, we switched cable/internet companies several times and had no problems since we weren't tied to the email. In our case, We found that the cable/internet provider will allow access to email for 6months after cancellation. Not sure if this is true on others. We also created another Gmail account for giving out to companies that require email address. Cuts down on the junk in my regular account. If they prove valuable, we change to our main email address.

While I have gmail account, I do not like that Google looks at my emails for advertising, if you do not believe me email a friend about something you have never done or bought, then watch the advertisements that pop up.
When I switch, I am going with a paid service that does not look at email.

I still use AOL and it seems to work fine. I really don't care if someone is reading my emails. If I had to switch, I would go to Gmail.
