Default Poor Maintenance

I know there has been a lot of discussion on golf course conditions in the last couple of months, but after golfing Volusia today I would like to offer this take on why courses (talking Executive Courses) tend to have poor green conditions.

Whoever is responsible for mowing the greens at Volusia should be let go and replaced with someone that knows how a mow greens and how to know when the mower is not cutting evenly. A number of greens had been scalped down to the earth in strips. It was obvious that the mower was not adjusted properly and was cutting unevenly, leaving scalped strips across the green and around the perimeter of the greens. I wonder what the consultant from the USGA would have to say if he was to view these greens. It is definitely not a weather problem. Volusia as a whole was not in very good condition.

The mower guys don't respond when I tell the how to run the equipment.

Here is the guy you need to call and share your concern. Let us know his response.

I wonder if the contract calls for specifications on mower maintenance -i.e. blade sharpening.

Just let him go? How about instructing him in the proper way to mow the greens? Establish a SOP and instruct workers to follow.

Watch the PGA games on TV , on prestigious courses and you have to admit that The Villages are in better shape than many of them. Play out side of The Villages and see what’s out there.

999/1000 would disagree.

... but there's always one.

Silver Lake must be where they train people to work on a course. The greens here have been by far the worst that i have played anywhere in the world.
If on the rare occasion they manage to pull off a proper cutting, then the holes are crooked and the flag lists about 15%.
Right now, and for the past two weeks the greens are truly unputtable. I doubt if the holes have been cut in a week as the grass is growing in on all sides.
Yes, i have in the past reported this stuff to Matt L. but i only get a response back stating that all is well and this is the way it needs to be.
I was an assistant GCS for a few years, i know better. I have golfed in 5 countries on three continents and even courses way off the track, family operated with age old equipment that do better than Silver Lake.
Many courses in TV seem to come back quickly, this one just gets worse.

PGA courses are far more interesting and in better condition than any Villages course. There are far more interesting courses outside The Villages that are in better condition, and much more reasonably priced. The Villages gets away with overpriced, boring designs since the have a "captive" audience.

only 999/1000----I'd go even higher. But I do have to ask what that person is smoking and where do we get some?

Regardless of the golf course conditions, I am still a lousy golfer.
