Cost Perspective

We took our son to MCO last night in our new Hybrid. Round Trip was total 136 Miles and we used 3 Gallons of gas @ $2.76/gal = $8.28 round trip.

Son got luggage buggy to take in bags. Cost $7 at terminal C. I get buggy for a quarter at Aldi's and even get my quarter back.

(I know I have not included tolls and use of car depreciation)

Two points - Hybrid autos can be a good investment option. Airport buggies are far better.

I replaced a 2008 Honda CRV with a 2024 Honda CRV hybrid the advertised city milage is 39 mpg , I was skeptical. My experience has been much better. With all the round abouts you usually don't come to a full stop, this makes a big difference . I have as yet never taken in out of the econ mode and have been getting slightly better than 50 mpg in the Villages, highway mpg not impressive comparatively , mid 20s if I remember right. I find this a good trade off as I do not do a lot of over the road travel .

Just looked for new car that would work for us. $80,000. We need space for motility equipment, so larger SUV. Odometer just rolled 40,000 on 2018, more than half was working or driving to and from TV.

This time in our life I don’t see any auto as a good investment. Average monthly fuel is $56, Disney once a month, or Gainesville, trips out of bubble for dining. Grocery or daily use items are arriving at our door. It’s been more than 10 years to shop retail, unless it’s on our way to planned event.

Our kids or grands, use private carriers from MCO or drive. They have a great system, Whoever drives calculates pickup of siblings at MCO. Starbucks waiting for each arrival, spirited driving conversation, about dining reservations, (yes we have foodies) golf and pool time, for the next 7-10 days.

But you are not including the bribes/payoffs needed to get the airport contract.

As a kid between high school and college, I spent the summer working for Continental Airlines. I worked at night in the baggage claim area of LAX. After a bit, one could discern the patterns of flights and know when it was going to be busy with the plane from Honolulu or when it would be dead for a couple hours.

I would spend those couple hours out in the parking structures hustling the luggage carts. Since so many people would forgo returning the carts to the terminal for the 25-cent deposit return. In a good shift, I would leave with my pockets heavy in quarters, about $15-$20 worth. On a bad shift, maybe only $7 or so. Since I was being paid something like $4 an hour, it was pretty good bank.

Of course the biggest perk was that I was a temporary Continental employee, not a third party contractor. So me and another guy got to fly to Hawaii standby for free! Of course, we upgraded to First Class for $10 each way. Best flight of my life
