Default What John Wayne wanted for his new daughter

Was reminded of this video by a friend and I want to share it with those who've never seen this clip from the Dean Martin show. I can't remember when I've heard any Hollywood star share this kind of sentiment in recent memory.

Very nice video clip of Dean and John. Thanks for posting it.

I do have a question hopefully someone can answer because I really do not know the answer.

John Wayne played in lots of Westerns and also lots of war movies. He always was thought of as a symbol of Americans and a true patriot. Why
did he not ever enlist in the military?

To my knowledge, no military service. As mentioned, he did appear in a lot of military/war themed movies.

Few people have served the interests of the United States with equal impact as the late great John Wayne. You can serve your country in myriad ways, and John Wayne served his beloved country well.

certainly is a heartwarming clip,
too bad more people don't teach their children values and respect.
stop and take the time to love our country and others.
(at least try to like one another), even while driving and golfing.

You're absolutely right about the Duke and after reading the lengthly write up about him at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000078/bio, I now better understand why my late father used to like him so much! IMO, the article is quite through and comprehensive, much more so than when I started reading it!

Also, I didn't find anything in the article about why he hadn't served in the military, or missed it, but I do believe that there must have been a very good reason why it didn't happen!

This post is what is important in life...about a great American that cared dearly about our country.

That other post about being shorted 6 cents at some restaurant is so trivial in the realm of things.

From what I read on the postings, no one seems to know why John Wayne never did enlist in the military during WWII.

It probably had to do with his contracts for pictures in Hollywood.

Anyhow, I have always enjoyed him as a good actor in lots of good movies.

From what I read after posting that question to Google, he tried to join the Naval Academy but was turned down.

What's the difference? This post is about a respected American movie actor wishing the freedoms he cherishes and the values he love be available to his daughter.

No difference to me . He tried to join and could not; that is more than many did.

Hard to believe, isn't it? John Wayne gets turned down from the US Naval Academy - and Jimmy (The Wimp) Carter gets accepted and graduates. Something just ain't right.

There's actually some controversy on his service or lack or it, and the studio's rumored actions in his deferment, but I still love the sentiment of his wishes for his daughter's future. His work to boost the country's morale during the war was an invaluable thing in addition.
