Default Safe rooms

I'm not having any luck with the search feature here at TOTV so I'll just post this question...sorry if I missed it somewhere.

What is the general opinion about safe rooms? Do any of you have one and do you feel they are really necessary?

Default Safe room

You could get one and put in on your lani and put a heater in and call it a sauna. If the weather radio goes off what shuld we do? Ther are no basements here you could go hide in the bath tub, we don't have a tub. Could hide under the table, but most of us have a small table. So I guess I am at God's mercy. Oh wait! We are at his mercy with whatever we do in life. So I just don't worry about it.
Just like Troy says......

Default Garage Floor

Maybe this was all a bad dream or did I hear that some people in the Villages had small excape areas built in their garage floor?

I think the only safe room we need is in the event of hurricanes or tornados. Pick the room in your house without windows, best option would be master closet, not the bathroom which is loaded with glass.

For those that think they need one, this may help.

For storm protection, anything under an EF4, go to the center of your house, most likely the master bedroom closet. No windows, no glass and protected on all sides. Now once you are in there and your house is destroyed how are you going to get out. Best advise is to have a shovel and a crowbar stored in the master closet. That way you have the means to dig your way out. Simple tools that could save your life. If the storm is an EF 4 or 5, take a chair with you, sit in the middle of the room bend over and kiss your back side good bye. You HAVE to be under ground to survive and EF 4 and above or just be really lucky with the hand of G*d on our shoulder.

Remember that you will need a corded phone. Cordless phones will not work in a power outage. Most likely your cell phone will not have a signal as the towers will be down.

Have a plan for all family members. Where to go, what to bring. Practice it a couple times, then go over the plan every now and then.

Might want to have some bottled water and some snacks to last for a day or so, if you have to dig your way out.

Hopefully none of us will ever need this advise, but its better to be prepared than wishing that you had done something to insure your own survival.

One house in our Village did put a safe room in their garage floor. I am not sure that they ever use it since we never had a hurricane or tornado in the area.

True...there is a company that will put a precast box (for better words) in your excavated garage floor. Kinda like climbing into your own coffin although looked about 2 - 3 times the size with benches along the side and a secure latched top. Best to be friendly with other occupants. Will see if I can't find the name of advertiser.
