Default New "Gonnabees"

Hi Everyone, we are Jan and Bob and we live in Waller (NW of Houston) Texas. We have visited TV twice following a preliminary "drive thru". The drive thru was Dec of 2010. We both had colds and we were coming home from visiting other retirement locations south of TV, so we just cruised thru on 466, down Buena Vista to LSL, over to Morse and on to Ocala for the nite. We booked a LSV in April and rented a villa in June for a week. We put the house up for sale and we're waiting to move! We've (I've) been reading TOTV on and off thru this time frame and of course learning a lot.
We live on a 9 hole golf course and Bob plays every day and I play as often as I can. I'm working part time and may do the same when we get to TV. Anyone that has lived in Houston.. how do you think the weather compares? We've heard that scheduling golf in the winter is difficult.. how bad is it?

Default Welcome to TV

Hi Jan and Bob,

I am not from the Houston area but did live near Dallas, TX. I find the weather to be better here than that. Perhaps it is the rain that we get in the end of summer that helps it out where Dallas was usually so dry.

Golf is busier in the winter time, but it is usually the big neighborhood golf groups that have a harder time getting slots all together.

Talk of the Villages is worth a great deal in finding out what's going on around here. So keep tuning in!

Default way better weather

IMO (and I lived in Houston twice, for about a year and a half each time), the weather is a lot better in TV than in Houston. Houston only had about 2 weeks in spring and fall that I would call nice. TV has great weather October, November, usually December and sometimes February thru April, with some good weather also in May and sometimes even June!

Yes, there are cold snaps, but they only last a few days (usually) and you will also have great days/weeks in December, January and February. Go on a cruise in January and hope you hit the bad week or two. Go visit friends/family up north or rent a mountain cabin in July/August for a couple of weeks to get a break.

janrbob,
Good luck on selling your house. We live in West Texas and my daughter lives in Montgomery in Walden. My wife thinks we could move there when we retire and we could but why would we with The Villages around. She is not convinced yet, I am working on that.
What caught my eye on your post was "Gonnabees"
I have officially changed my status from "wannabees" to "gonnabees" It is a much more positive outlook.
Hope you sell fast and am sure you will love it.

Hi Jan and Bob, Just want to say welcome to TOTV. I've been to Houston several times as my company's corp. office is located in Houston. I was in Houston 3 weeks ago for 2 days when it was 100 degrees both days, Whoo eee it was hot! Keep reading TOTV and don't hesitate to post questions and you will learn a lot about moving to and living in TV.

janrbob,

I grew up in Brenham but moved to Hawaii in 1967. We are gonnabees as well as soon as I retire. I still have family in Brenham, Houston and Austin. I have seen several post on this website from people from Houston or other Texas cities.

Jan and Bob, I lived in the Houston area (Dairy Ashford exit and Kingwood) for a total of 14 years. I have lived in The Villages for 5 and I much prefer the weather here. I have lived several places and I have never experienced the heat and humidity as bad as Houston. Welcome to The Villages! You will probably love it, most do.

So happy to hear you are planning to join us here.

Golf is challenging to schedule in the winter and the restaurants are busier and the exercise classes are lining up sometimes a half an hour ahead of time.

The reason why is ...that this is such a great place to be.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to TV!!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and warm welcome! Wasn't sure there were any folks from Texas on TOTV, so hearing that playgolf06 had lived in Kingwood was cool.. our daughter lives off North Park in Kingwood... we're planning to buy an "experienced" house vs. new. We are renting a house Dec 17-31 just off Rainey Trail. Hopefully that will help in deciding what area we would prefer. I would love to meet ya'll while we are visiting .. is there a TOTV get together planned in that time frame?

The heat and dryness here this summer has been horrible.. we're in a 50 year drought (Waller had less that 6" of rain in 12 mos. vs. normal of 44 inches/year) and we had 40+ days over 100 vs. 3-4 in a normal summer.. crazy numbers .. pretty sure i don't want to live in Phoenix after this..

Dear Jan and Bob,
Welcome to TOTV.....!
We have very good friends who live in Waller....names are Deb and Jim, who have 3 wonderful boys just like we do. I'd love to get them to visit Florida....maybe if you did know them they would have more reason to!

Anyway, Welcome! Folks here are great and they have all the answers.....lol.

Default In 2 more weeks !

Hi we are Terry & Carl and will be leaving Mass. on October 26 to become "permanent " Villagers.
We came to visit for a week the end of May , and knew this is where we want to spend our retirement years. Everything our friends have told us about living in the Villages was so obvious ....wonderful. On our last day of our stay, we bought a home...never intending to do it...just 'looking'.
Looking forward to chatting with you all. I've been doing quite a bit of reading on here...helpful info.

Thanks...Terry
