Just wondering if anyone has hired Mayflower or some other company to move them to the villages what kind of expense it was. I have heard averages form here in texas for hired movers to be 8k to 12k and for that price i might just do it myself.

We just got a quote from Mayflower yesterday of $4200 to move the contents of an 1800sf, three bedroom home from Maine to Florida sans living room furniture (mostly antique New England-style furniture we are selling) and appliances.

We chose Mayflower over United and Atlas because of all the good reviews on this site and the negative reviews about the latter two. We called the local affiliate in June to move from Baltimore to TV. We sold a lot of our furniture to the buyer. We only had a master BR set and and a few other pieces but we did have 70 large boxes of which 10 were very large wardrobe boxes. The estimate was $3400. After they picked up our goods on June 27th they called and said after weighing the shipment it will only be $2850.

Delivery was suppose to be on July 8th, 3 days after we closed. Every week we got a new delivery date from our agent in Baltimore, they said Mayflower didn't have any drivers available. Finally after 2-1/2 weeks they asked if we would reconsider United, I said yes, anybody is fine. We've been sleeping on an air mattress and no television since our TV's and Directv boxes were in the load. I had to reschedule Directv three times.

Finally our delivery was made by United Van Lines on July 28th. During the delay I had called Mayflower to file a complaint and they gave me an email address to file a late claim after our delivery had been made. We paid the driver with a certified check for $2850 on a Sunday. I filed an email claim on that Tuesday and on Friday in my mail was a check for $2000 from Mayflower for being late.

8k sounds about right, especially if they pack your breakables. An initial quote of 6k usually means 8k when all is done.

I would sell as much furniture as I could then hire someone to load up a rent a van. Hire someone else to unload it. And, get what else I need at a consignment or thrift shop. It would be cheaper I imagine.

$8K-$12K seems rather high. We recently moved all of our household goods and one vehicle from a remote island in Panama to TV, and we paid just over $11K. For the $11k the moving company came from Panama City to our home on the island, totally packed up everything (114 boxes, furniture, and auto) as we were not allowed to pack anything due to U.S. customs regulations. We didn't have to lift a finger. Our goods were taken to Panama City, put on a ship and sent to Miami where it was picked up by A1 Fargo, an agent of Atlas. Atlas delivered to our door in TV, unpacked all the boxes, and hauled away all of the bubble wrap, packing paer, boxes, etc. This was definitely the easiest move we have ever made (and hopefully the last!), well worth every penny.

I've moved across country several times in my career using several different movers. Some were better than others but all managed to get my stuff where it needed to go in one piece. Our last move was 2 months ago to FL (about an hr from TV) using Wheaton Movers. We moved a 2900 sf house 700 miles and the cost for packing and moving was $6900. Two yrs ago, a similar distance move cost nearly $8000 using Atlas. Both of these included extra fees for moving 2 large LED TVs, our washer and dryer and several pieces of art.

we are moving from Toledo OH with about the same stuff and it is costing $4100 and that includes the moving company packing and unpacking. I was very pleased and really expected it to be higher.

We are using Mayflower. The quote is guaranteed so that is the max we will pay. could be less if it weighs less than the estimate.

We have used Mayflower and Wheaton in the past --they both use local people who no longer seem as responsible as years ago. We just got an estimate from FlatRate movers (recommended on TOV by a couple of people) which was reasonable and they seem very professional --full time employees, no local contracting.
