Default Another Dog Question

When you pick up after your pet, how do you dispose of it? We use the bags that the newspaper comes in and I see a lot of folks using these bags. I don't think these bags are hermetic and thence probably not the most sanitary way to pick up poop. We have a large glass jar with a screw on top that sits outside the garage for storage of these bags until trash day. The problem is with the odor when the lid is unscrewed. The smell will knock you over. Is there a better way to do this disgusting chore?

I suspect you'll get some interesting comments about this topic........we bought a decorative plant pot that we leave at the corner of the house and put the bagged doggie waste in there. No smell because it's outside!

My friend uses bags that break down in water, and she flushes the waste, bags and all! I'm not sure I believe that the bags totally break down.

We keep the waste in a container in the garage, and dispose of it on garbage day. I'd love to hear a better solution!

Please! Please! Don't do as some have done in the past. Pick up with plastic bags from publix and throw in the storm sewers (terribly polluting), polluting the ponds or dispose of in trash cans at mail facilities (yuck-what a smell). As bare suggested dispose of at home. Our little guy (all 9# of him) is easy, pick up & wrap with piece of paper towel and flush at home. Here come the comments.............

We use the little blue doggie bags when we go for walks or travel. We are still up north so in the warm weather seasons we use a Doggie Dooley...it's a small doggie septic system made for home use and they are easy to install. In the winter months we use a scooper and a 'poo pale' with a bag inside that we send out with the trash once a week.

Funny 'poo pale' story...

Usually my husband just takes the bag out of the pale and puts it in with the rest of the trash but on this night, for some unknown reason, he sat the whole pale on the curb. Yep, you guessed it...some 'scrapper' saw the metal pale and stole it...poo and all!

Wonder what they thought when they opened it!

Smile Pooper Pail

Having 2 large dogs we usually have quite a collection by garbage day. We bought a galvanized pail with locking lid at Lowe's and those hang in the toilet deodorizers. I hang 1 sometimes 2 in the pail and it helps with the odor.

I have a little bucket and large plastic scoop, I scoop it into the bucket and flush it down the toilet. I rinse the bucket out with the hose and leave it outside. Of course I only let my girls go in my yard so I don't have to worry about picking it up anywhere else. I figure it is not much different then cleaning a litter box, I scoop the yard a couple of times a day. Of course it can be hazardous, I have to look very carefully so I don't get blown up.

i have a small garbage can out side behind the bushes...the bags go in there until trash day. I use inexpensive moth balls from the $ store to mask the odor...works! have been doing this for 5 years and no problems...just double bag them on trash day and put in regular trash bags!

Back in the day, when we had a baby around. I found that a diaper ginnie works wonders, almost no odor at all. you could put it in the garage and make your deposit when your done walking the dog.

I pick up with plastic bag, put in covered garbage can with toilet deoderizer hanging in it, dispose of on garbage day. Like the idea of the decorative pot outside though. Might try that.

Pretty much the same way we deal with this.

FYI: Regarding the bag the newspaper comes in. One of our neighbors collects those and gives them to Operation Shoebox. They then use them to pack items going to military personnel overseas.

We had 2 small Rat Terriers and used baggies to pick up poop. We would then flush the contents in the toilet and put the used bags in the garbage. Worked well for us.

85-lb golden retriever. How about small pooh-dedicated dorm fridge in garage? Refrigerate pooh in their baggies till garbage day. I know, gross. But in MI in the summer we leave it in baggies outside the garage till garbage day. Sometimes when it's hot, the bags get smelly. I'm concerned about what to do in TV Feb. to June. This will be our first season in a new house in Tamarind Grove.
