Posting from my phone so I have no link, but this car leasing is another example of government waste of our tax dollars. $1000 per month is nuts. Both party members are doing this.

Should come out of their salary, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

As far as I know, living expenses do come out of congressional salaries. That is why lots of junior congressmen actually share houses in Washington.

I suggest, Posh, that you contact your Congressman about it and ask him if he leases a car at taxpayer expense and that you disapprove of the practice. Better yet, next time there is a "town meeting" wherever you live and your Congressman is there, ask the question in public so everyone attending can get the answer as to if he leases a car at taxpayer expense - and that you disapprove.

Just some general information...
"There has been a lot of talk in recent months about how Congress should cut the budget and be a better steward of taxpayer dollars. So, I thought I would take a look through the document that shows how lawmakers spend their office budgets. My focus was narrowed to one basic question - how many members of the House spend money from their office accounts to lease automobiles, whether for use in their districts or while they are in Washington, D.C. First, let's stipulate that there is nothing illegal about spending office account money on a car or cars." On Your Dime | Jamie Dupree Washington Insider It is about one year old but even lists how much each is spending at the time.. Then.... "Over at the AJC, Jamie Dupree notes that some members of Congress are spending rather lavishly on the taxpayer dime to lease cars (emphasis mine): My review of what’s called the “Statement of Disbursements” from the House shows that at least 87 members of the House used money to lease some kind of vehicle for their official work. Some of those 87 were frugal with your tax dollars – the lowest lease that I could find was by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY), who paid $219 per month to get a vehicle from Acme Auto Leasing. At the other end of the scale, there were some much larger numbers for those who made a lump sum payment on their vehicle." Congressmen and car leases At least make sure you are armed with info before you step into the ring ![]() |

Anyone note that the allowance is higher for "green" vehicles? Still not where I can copy links but happy some folks are willing to root this out for themselves.
