Default Chair rail - how high?

Have 10' ceilings and not sure how high to go with the chair rail. I believe 8' ceilings are at 36" and 10' at like 40"? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I've found there is no standard height for the chair rail but the rule of thumb is about 1/3 the distance form the floor to the ceiling... usually 30"-36" will suffice. OR... just slide the chair you will be using in that room over to the wall and mark the height where the back of the chair will hit the wall.

Agree, most are 30-36 regardless of height, in colonial rooms with 10-ft. ceilings, I’ve seen chair rail set at 30 in. from the floor.

There are some 18th-century pattern books that show the chair rail at 24 in. off the floor. In fact, in rooms with 10-ft.

Appreciate the feedback and I'll get my husband started on the project now that I have sound advice! Thanks.
