Default Fountain of Youth...

My first joint of my left index finger (next to finger nail) has been sore for about 2 weeks. I'm afraid it's arthritis (my first ever). It doesn't make joy for me when I try to swing a golf club...or do 100 push-ups (yeah, sure!).

I've read that 'Turmeric' helps with inflammation. If so, might that help the sore joint on my index finger? Any other herbal ideas?

It's either that, or I need to call Ponce de Leon and ask him where the Fountain of Youth is located in Florida.

If it is osteoarthritis, it should go away or greatly reduce with an advil or tylenol. As that wears off, it will come back. You really need a diagnosis, but you can try this and see if it acts like arthritis. Heat can help also.

I had the same problem about 5-6 years ago when I was 65. It hurt something awful especially for the first few swings. I suffered with this for several months untill I doubled my glucosamine-chondroitin intake and began using some old fashioned grip sqeezers. I haven't had any pain in years and am hitting my drives further than I ever did before.

All of the Indian spices are excellent for inflammation, including Turmeric.
Do you see any "nodules" on the finger joint? Plain old aspirin will relieve the pain. Pineapple is also great for arthritics.......

Vitamin D3 which is otherwise accumulated via "sunshine" which you have plenty of at your disposal, if you are presently in Florida,........also available in gelcaps at the health food store.......as well as "drops".

I have tried all of the "roll on" type analgesics and find Joint Flex to be the best......the Icy Hot with capsacin cream can cause irritation and rash. Super Blue with emu oil used to work, but then it ceased......

I have one of those dpl Nuvee LED "hand held" infra red gizmos which is supposed to relieve joint stiffness, pain, etc.......associated with arthritis. It is soothing, however, too small for the knees, etc. Might be perfect for the wrist and fingers. I should try it on my own wrist....again.
It is soothing; just think they should make it "stand alone" so one doesn't have to "hold it" with their sore wrist........physical therapists have bigger ones in their places of business.

Word of caution: Do NOT use the infra red at the same time you have joint flex or any type of roll on pain reliever applied.

Be glad that for now it is only in your finger joint.......(HOWEVER, IF IT IS CLOSE TO YOUR FINGER NAIL, PERHAPS IT IS AN INFECTION AND NOT ARTHRITIS?????)

Best wishes and GOOD LUCK,

The Fountain of Youth is not far from where you live. It's in your local supermarket and it's called "the produce department". Actually, it should be call the "anti-inflammation department".

The other side (where they sell processed foods) should be called the "inflammation department". That's the side you want to stay away from.

Oh dear. It is the beginning of THAT part of your life. It is like when you turn 14 and get zits...but at 65, it could be arthritis, could be gout, doubt if it's due to pregnancy. All will be cured by leaving Cincinnati and coming to TV....or at least lessoned, or you will be distracted...It will be better, the sooner you move here and be with us.

Stop foolin' around. Kathy is already retired!!!!!!!

And quit messin' with the herbs and supplements. Go to an MD!!!

Default joint pain

I was at the Markets of Marion one day looking for what ever it was I was looking for..I had my parents wtih me who both suffer and crippled up with arthritis in the hands. This spanish lady was selling jewerly and her hands were all crippled up with arthritis and her feet and legs also had it. Her daughter claimed that for months she was almost to the point of being bedridden. She did not speak English so her daughter translated...She said you buy ACAI berry juice and take 4 oz in the am and 4 oz in the pm and come back in one week and let me know how you are...we did just that..within a week my dad was able to almost close his hands again.something he had not done in years the pain and stiffness were easing up.
I have been taking it as well as I have it too...I can tell you it does wonderful things for joint pain as well as MENOPAUSEal HOT FLASHES! I had noticed that my hot flashes that were fast and furious were deminishing. So I told one of my friends who sells herbs at the Market of Marion as she is also Menopausal...her hot flashes have disappeared as well..so she has told a friend and that friend told a friend etc,,,they claim the same. So there is indeed something to this Acai berry stuff it's chock full of anti oxidents and so good for you.
You can get it at Walmart in the OJ section in dairy. Its from Genesis today, try it and come back to me in a week and let me know how you are doing...best of luck...

Tumeric is a blood thinner, be careful when playing with these home remedies.

I was speaking of using Turmeric as a spice, such as in Indian food.
It's been used for centuries in India's Ayurvedic medicine.

It's a perennial shrub that is grown in India and other Asian tropics.

Like ginger, also a spice....it does have blood thinning capabilities.

I myself would not recommend taking a "supplement" of turmeric, however, I see nothing wrong with the spices.....they are all delicious.

Aspirin is also a blood thinner.

Anyone already on Coumadin or one of the other blood thinners following heart valve surgery, etc. SHOULD NOT take or ingest anything that would further thin their blood.........even broccoli, cranberries, etc....aspirin,
ginger, etc.........if it's in a "dish of food" then only in moderation.

I know someone who used Chinese herbal teas for various health problems and thought six teabags would be even better than one.
They mixed GINGER and some other one..........and ended up with a serious BLOODY NOSE......to the extent of almost having to go to the emergency room...........so, lets just say..."less is more".

I was thinking more in the way of adding to preparing an Indian recipe.
Dr. Oz has explained how excellent all the Indian spices are.......
obviously , any thing that has a medicinal effect will be compounded by pharmaceutical drugs............so best to be wise about it.

The health benefits of turmeric lie in the active ingredient called curcumin. This powerful compound gives turmeric its therapeutic benefits, its yellow color, and it's pungent flavor. TURMERIC HARBORS ANTI OXIDENT, ANTI INFLAMMATORY, ANTIBACTERIAL, STOMACH SOOTHING, AND LIVER AND HEART PROTECTING EFFECTS.

Turmeric is thought to reduce inflammation by lowering histamine levels and it may also stimulate the adrenal glands to increase production of a hormone that reduces inflammation. It's often used to ease joint pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. Ditto for other disorders in the arthritis family.

The antioxidants in turmeric are disease fighting substances that mop up the continuous onslaught of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that damage cells as they travel through the body and are responsible for premature aging and even diseases like cancer.

Actually, among the many health benefits of turmeric, is that it habors antiplatelet activity. the herb reduces the ability of the blood to form clots, and as such.......this may improve circulation....and offer some protection from heart attack and stroke.

But if already on pharmaceuticals, then I would NOT take it.

Laboratory studies have shown turmeric has anti cancer properties.

Ditto for fighting bacterial infections.

It wouldn't hurt to have it in your spice rack...to flavor food.

I just read that it is considered a SAFE "HERB".

Food for thought: If it were as simple as sprinkling some herbs over our food while cooking.............we'd put all the pharmaceutical companies out of business.

Just love those commecials for arthritis meds. on the evening news.

Now, which is worse........the joint stiffness and pain or the various lymphomas, T.B., blood cancers, etc. that are possible side effects.
All of the "chemicals" that the pharmaceutical companies push are far worse than the spices of India...........

Indian food is delicious. We have Indian friends. Some are vegetarians. Others eat meat. All of their dishes are extremely tasty and heavy on the legumes and veggies and rice....they make delicious lentils for those vegans in our midst. Plus...their recipes are NOT as salty as Chinese takeout........which as much as I love it, does make my joints get inflammed.

Maybe you should have your golf club grip checked out by one of club professionals. You may be putting stress on that joint if your grip is not right.
