Horrible...absolutely horrible...that poor woman.

Something has to be done about those kids...it just can't be swept under the rug and forgotten about.

May I ask how you know that the school's efforts so far to deal with this is "a joke"?

What has the school done, or should have done?

Let's say you're in charge. Please tell me the steps you would take.

Yes the schools slow response is a joke. This happened in April. Being a former teacher you cannot touch or show signs of be offensive to another. This young man did attempt to touch her. You may not think that somebody says they would like to burn down your house is not offensive I do.They talked about coming over to her house to do those things and this is not agressive behavior. The bus should have been stopped and school administrators take charge. Police should have been called right there. Teachers cannot touch, put students can? Thinking back to my school years,if that was one of my Nun teachers that I had, that young man would have been slapped for his behavior. One of my former students, now a High School Prin. had his students walking back from the gym one day, after a anti-bully lecture, quess what happened-- 2 girls started a fight with 100 onlookers standing by, caught on tape. Not one of the students looking on said stop this. They played the video for a day by our local paper, until it was pulled. The days of saying "Johnie stop that are over".

I live and teach about 30 miles from the school district where this incident happened. The response from the school district was not slow. This incident happened Monday, June 18, 2012. The school district became aware of the incident very late in the day.

Within the past hour there was a press conference with the police department and the school district. The district is following the disciplinary rules outlined by New York State. The adult who was bullied has chosen to NOT press charges at this time. She is currently satisfied with what the district is doing. She still has an opportunity to press charges in the future.

What these students did was wrong! Unfortunately, the students and their families have been receiving death threats--another form of bullying.

This incident is being handled by those who know all the facts about what happened. This case should not be tried in this forum.

Just to reiterate what Kfierle is saying. This did not occur in April. This happened the last day of school June 18th. The school and the police are working together. With the world wide attention the school knows it can not let this slide. I believe an example and discipline to deter anything like this from happening again will be imposed. Hopefully it will.

The last two posters said it better than anyone could.

Stories hit the national news faster than ever, and the further away we are from them, the less we really know.

I'm not condoning the behavior of the children, but she should be fired. What exactly is her job anyway? Bus monitor? What is that? She obviously doesn't have any respect from the kids and hasn't established any boundaries or rules.

Kids have bullied since the beginning of time and will continue to bully. I'm not forgiving that behavior in the least. I think the problem is adults have forgotten how to be adults. She isn't the right person for that job.

I don't look toward Facebook for my news, at least what's important anyway.

apparently, the 68-year old grandmother had no authority to take any action, so your point is valid. when I was a kid on a school bus, if things got "out of order," the bus driver, who didn't have a monitor, pulled the bus over to the side of the road, and straightened things out ! That was that !

Times have changed !

So what is her purpose on the bus?

agreed.

I don't see any problem with a monitor walking the bus to maintain order, but what do I know ?

last time I was on a school bus was about 50 years ago !

this is a sad indicator of the state of affairs in this country, IMO
