Default Turbo Tax Potential Fraud

The other day I received two envelopes from Turbo Tax. The address was mine, but there were 2 different names as addressee. I gave them back to our postal clerk, but she informed me that the address was mine, so she had to deliver it to my address.

I was just going to throw them away, but I could feel a credit card inside both of them. Upon opening them I discovered each had a debit card stating that it was my tax refund. The instructions included an 800 number to activate the card.

I telephoned the 800 number and explained the situation. I was informed this was probably a fraudulent tax return and to cut up the debit cards. The female account representative also informed me she was going to "flag" the accounts.

I further inquired if any of my other personal info was utilized and discovered it was not. No, I did not give her my social, or any other important information. She asked me if I was born sometime in the 1980's, as that was the date of birth years utilized in these returns, of course I was not.

I smell a rat here.......

Check with the IRS to see if a fraudulent tax return has been filed.

A few months ago, someone got hold of my mother's Social Security number, and redirected her direct deposit from her bank to a Green Dot debit card. I got things straightened out, but it was not easy, and took a while.

I check my mother's Social Security account every day. You can never be too vigilant.
