Default The Villages Hospital by the numbers (help me figure this out)

The Villages Hospital just celebrated its tenth anniversary and they put a 4 page flier in last Sunday's Daily Sun newspaper (July 15, 2012).

The heading on the back page was: "By The Numbers"

My question involves two of those numbers:

1) 2012> Inpatient 86,830

2) 2012> 223 beds

First of all, we are only a little more than half way through the year, so how did they come up with 86,830 inpatients for 2012?

Secondly, even if the above number is a projection, they don't have enough beds to accomodate 86,830 inpatients. If every bed was filled every day of the year, and every bed was turned over daily, that would accomodate only 81,395 inpatients. That's with every bed filled and maximum turnover. So they reported 5,435 more inpatients than the hospital's capacity can handle.

What do you make of it?

Why don't you call them and ask, I bet they know the answer.

Smile Hospital

Inpatient is probably anyone that uses a bed. Doesn't necessary mean overnight. So, ER or day surgeries etc...all would be inpatient.

I believe patients served in the ER and sent home would come under the heading of "outpatient".

Thanks, I think you're right about that. When I get the answer I'll post it.

I called the hospital but the two people I talked to didn't have an answer for me. One said she would try to find out.

Yes, you got it right! After a couple of calls to the hospital and a lot of waiting for call-backs, I finally got the answer. The 86,830 inpatients they stated in the flyer for 2012 was a mistake. That number of inpatients was for the whole ten years. The correct number for 2012 is 13,948.

The woman who called said a correction will be printed and I assume she meant in The Daily Sun.

P.S. Thanks to Bogie for encouraging me to call.

That's a relief. For a minute there I thought every resident of TV had received in-patient treatment at the hospital this year.
