Default Out Of State Auto Titles...

When we change our offical address to Florida this January and we register our vehicles what does Florida do when you come from a state where the owner doesn't hold the title? In our situation if you own your car outright and there is no financing, the owner holds the title. However, if your vehicle is financed, you don't have possession of the title. The title number is printed on your registration, but you don't have physical possession of it. We have one of each.

Since Florida wants to see your title, how is that handled?

You go to the tax collector office with the name and fax number of your finance company and they will fax over a form asking for the title. When the tax collector receives it he will call you and then you can get your registration. But have your Florida license at that time.

So you're saying to get your Florida DL before you apply to change your plates? Is that correct?

Yes but get the form faxed to your finance company. That takes a week or so to get back
