Default Courteous Driving

In TV we have quite a mix of vehicles, trucks, SUV's, small sedans, and golf carts. These vehicles must co-exist, particularly in parking lots. Wouldn't it be helpful if you would stop when you are going down a parking lane and you see someone trying to back out of a parking place? This simple courtesy would make everyone safer and prevent some "fender benders."

it's quite obvious that not all drivers exercise simple courtesy not only in parking lots! DO NOT HONK AT ME! I'm retired and in no hurry! I'd rather be "safe than sorry"!

Sorry, I disagree.

It is best to wait til the road is clear before backing out.

Otherwise the traffic would back up and create a big jam.

and when the way is clear and you start to back out....then comes the person who is willing to risk hitting you or the other parked cars to go by you anyway....this happens all too often here in TV.

For some reason some in our elder generation here in TV seems always in too much of a hurry to be a polite driver.

A friend of mine was in an accident in a parking lot where a driver was going across lanes and broadsided him.

I use extreme caution when in a parking lot as something unexpected may happen. It is everyone's responsibility to use caution when backing out of a space so I don't this a little at a time. I don't expect anyone to stop to accomodate me but I sure appreciate it, if I don't see them.

I am a firm believer that one should take their right of way, when it is theirs and give up the right of way, when it is the other guys. In other words, just follow the rules of the road, and nobody gets hurt!

Obvious exceptions would be during extreme traffic situations, like leaving an event with hundreds leaving at the same time, or a accident situation which has traffic backed up.

Keep in mind, if you take a right of way that is not yours, and there is an accident, it's your fault. Not a very likely scenario in a parking lot, but a definate maybe on the road.

as the old saying goes:

the right of way is yours to give not to take!!It seems in that regard we have more than our share of residents who think the rules do not apply to them or just don't care.....fortunately they are in the minority....but still too many.

As for those who cut across parking lots and in and out of spaces they are the most dangerous. Completely oblivious to anybody around them. My favorite sport is to sloww way down and creepy crawl by when when is headed my way.
Childish but I enjoy it and as I tell my wife who hates when I do that.....I may have just saved someones life from the jerk behind the wheel....maybe the jerks!!!! more affectionately labeled...parking lot kamakazees.
