Default Nicknames.

I grew up in a neighborhood where a lot of people had nicknames. I thought it might be fun to recall some of those nicknames and how they were given out. I'll start.

"Louie The Hat" because he always wore a hat and never took it off.

Louie the Lump. He probably looked like a lump sitting for hours on a barstool. Anyhow, that's my guess.

Since my name is Patricia, I had a lot of nicknames...Patty, Patsy, Patsy Ann, Pat, Trish...but grandma called me Susie. Mom said that Grandma just wanted a "little Susie"...frankly I just think grandma drank a lot.

Reminds me of my grandmother who went down a list of names until she got it right.

Grandma didn't drink but her memory was suspect.

My LI friends had boring nicknames, Buffy, Bitsy ... totally boring.

My father had his friends from DA BRONX, there was Chisele Chin, Needle Nose, Nosy Rosie, then of course, Big Joey, Little Joey, da other one Joey. There could be ten Joey's and you always knew which one they were speaking of.

Sedge - last name Southwick, so called sedgewick, shortened to sedge
Woos = Me - a coach couldn't pronounce my name - called me woosenback, shortened to woos
Moose - Me - some girls heard my buddies call me woos and they thought it was moose, so that became my new nickname
Blimp - was an all-state football player and golden gloves boxing champ who was rather rotund
Runt - was blimp's brother who was not small, but was small by comparison
Animal - blimp and runt's little brother
two beers - couldn't hold his liquour
beaver - short for beaver head, his head was rather flat in back - some of these are sort of mean sounding, but we all accepted them with humor.
Rets - short for cigarettes, he was a heavy smoker
Doggy - somebody thought he looked like a doggy and it stuck
JAT the Cat - James Arthur Teegarden
Seminole - Somebody saw a fishing show with a Seminole Indian guide, and thought he looked like him
Heavy - last name Heavalow
There are more - everybody had a nickname - but this is enough
