Cape Canaveral has a beautiful beach. About one hour and 45 minutes to the SE. Not crowded, very little commercialized. We have a second home in Brevard and love it. Check out Cherie Down.

Flagler Beach between Daytona and St Aug...dog friendly and there's an awesome bar/restaurant on it, not 20 yards from the water.

St Pete beach is by far the best in my opinion. White sand and quiet.

I would go along with St. Pete Beach. The sand is so powder soft it is unbelievable. It is a reasonable one day trip from The Villages.

New Smyrna Beach is nice also - but rip currents are more plentiful there than on the Gulf side. Not to scare anyone away but New Smyrna Beach is called The Shark Bite Capital of the World. shark bite capital of us - Yahoo! Search Results

We, too, are looking for a closer nice beach. We love Vero beach...used to go there when my kids were little. But, it is about 3 hours from here if I remember correctly. On the subject, are there any nicer, closer beaches that have shells? Thinking ahead to
our grandkids visiting....

Fred Howard Park Beach in Tarpon Springs, is one of the closest to TV and is very nice with ample parking.

I agree New Smyrna beach----and you can drive right on to the beach and tailgate out of your vehicle. On the Gulf side----Treasure Island which is just south of St. Petersburg.

Important to know the Atlantic is surfier and loud, the gulf is calm and quieter. If you go north of Tampa Bay the water is dark, fishy smelling, and wild boars may chase you away.

PS, you can take your dog on Flagler, and the sand is orange, but I don't think the dogs caused that.

Fort Island Beach in Crystal River on the Gulf is 40 miles closer to TV. Take State Hwy 44/County Hwy 44 West until it ends at the beach. About a 60 mile drive.

Ditto very nice with ample parking.

Well, I go to the beach for the therapeutic sounds of the surf, the beautiful waves, and birds. I love Cape Canaveral. Just locals there, not a touristy beach. The cruise ships going out on Thursdays at 4:00 is also very cool! I agree with DougB!

Hey Pammy, you like pina coladas and getting caught in the rain?
