Default HP Tablet for $179.00

HP is going to sell a tablet for $179 in April putting pressure on Apple to reduce it's price.

I am somewhat ignorant of these new devices. Does this tablet act like/replace the need for a desktop? Can it be used anywhere? Does it run off of wifi or something similar?

I need to be brought into the 21st century.

Just my opinion, but I think you will not hear much about this new HP tablet in another few months. While they are trying to compete on price point, they will not compete on features and functionality.

I will admit that going with Android, as the OS, is a step in the right direction. Their previous offering, with WebOS (Previously Palm) went nowhere, so over a billion dollars down the drain. Unfortunately, the tablet space is so crowded with competitors, I don't think it's enough to say, "We have one too and it's cheaper". They will have to "win" customers away from Apple, Samsung, Asus, Microsoft...you name it.

To truly knock Apple from the perch, it will take a true innovator. For 5 years, everyone has been playing catch up to Apple...iPhones, iPads, MacBooks Pro and Airs, iPods, etc. All the while, Apple has been building the eco-system to support all these products. ...and, for the most part, each new version of the Apple products are better than the last.

No, these tablets will not replace the desktop, in the short term. Most are used solely as a "consumption" device. i.e. email, web browsing, calendaring, etc. Of course, there are Apps for just about everything. However, in the business world, it will be some time before the desktops or even the laptops are replaced. All tablets use WiFi and some tablets have wireless connection capabilities via Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, etc.

I'm sure others here have an opinion of this.

Cheers....

Thanks Mike. I guess the apple iphones is still the best device on the market for the combination of receiving call, browsing the web and getting e-mails if I read your post correctly.

Put that $179 towards an IPad. It won't replace a laptop although I use mine 90% of the time.
