Default Mahjong

Can I go to the Mahjong for Beginners at the rec center to learn how to play or is it better to take a lesson at the College?

Default either is fine

but most important is to practice. You can meet players interested in getting together at both. Just take the first step and get a group together on a fairly regular basis outside of class, at least that's my advice (since you sorta asked).

Joan DeCarlo use to teach a class at Laurel Manor. Good for beginners.

There is a beginners group also at Fish Hawk on Thursday mornings. I learned from friends and one class with Joan.

I am sure you will find plenty of people to help you. Go to rec centers and sometimes just watch.

Good Luck

Good Luck
I learned to play Mahjongg from Joan DiCarlo at Chula Vista Rec Center. She is great. There are usually a bunch of beginners who learn together, it's really fun. The Rec News lists Mahjongg games and classes.
