Default The frog in the well.

A frog falls down into a 12 foot well. He tries to jump up the well's wall but it is very slippery. Because of how hard he has a time of getting a good grip, for every three feet he goes up the wall, he slides down another two feet. How many jumps will it take him to reach the top?

Good answers so far. Have seen this question elsewhere on the Internet. Sometimes using 50, 30, 20 and other depths for the well.

If the frog jumps up 3 feet and then loses 2 feet, he will hit the three foot mark on his 1st jump, the four foot mark on his second jump, etc. So, he will hit the 12 foot mark on his tenth jump(and the slip back two feet) You can change the depth of the well to any number and it will always be two jumps less than the depth. So a 50 foot depth...48 jumps. 100 foot depth...98 jumps
As least, that's my way of figuring it out.
That was fun, Tal. Thanks for posting.

My frog stopped for a beer a couple of times because it was exhausting work jumping up from way down there. That is why I chose 14 jumps because by the time he/she got to the top he/she was pretty sloppy drunk

I'm changing my answer again. It takes 9 jumps to get to 9 feet. Assuming the 10th jump reaches the last section of the wall at 12' but does not clear, it takes one more jump, which is 11.
11 is not a choice, so this is a trick question.

I choose C. My fifth grade teacher told me to always choose C when I did not know the answer.

Seems to be 10. After the tenth jump the frog will jump up three feet and get out of the well.

I got it wrong on the FunTrivia.com quiz that had this problem as one of its 10 questions. http://www.funtrivia.com/#Taltarzac I picked 12 but did not get the point of the riddle.

Why We Need Common Core: "I choose C." - YouTube
In the USMC it was Dive bomb Charlie - or pick C. Although after a much used choice of this answer (and failing a lot of tests) I found that it was not really a good choice. So I used to alternate between B and C since B is the first letter of my first name. Did not work either. I guess they want you to really know the answer.
