My husband and I are closing on a new house in TV one week from today!! Moving to TV has been a long time dream for both of us but the opportunity to move came up very suddenly....how do you pass that up??!!!! We couldn't be more excited! I am looking for advice on closing (or anything TV related)...things you wish you had thought of or wished you had asked for/about. Actually, any advice at all will be appreciated.

Get rid of anything you don't really need because this is a much simpler lifestyle here in TV. Many people bring too much "stuff" then they have to deal with getting rid of it.

Couldn't agree more. Also avoid hiring anyone who knocks on your door offering a service. Lastly, don't worry about getting unpacked right away. Explore, dance, and just have fun! Welcome to TV!

We moved in on April 1; this was our 10th move (USA and overseas) in 33 years. I have routinely devoted a spiral bound notebook to our move; the current notebook has proved invaluable as usual. I just used it yesterday to check off the 11 items that "Tim the Tool Man" completed (e.g., attic stairs, garage shelves); we worked on that list from Day One. Our notebook has dedicated pages with a title at the top. For example, a list of things to do/bring from your old home. A list of things to do/buy for your TV home. A punch list of items in your TV home that the building contractor will fix free of charge. One page to list business contacts. Another page to list new friends. As something is completed, I draw a single line through the item so it is still readable. I also dedicated a small container for cards from business contacts and new friends. Finally, we purchased a large desk calendar to keep track of our daily lives (e.g., a call by a service person, a class we enrolled in, a visit by grandchildren, a block party).

So true. When we pulled up to our new home from our long trip from NJ with our car full of our stuff...we just left it, put our bathing suits on and went to the pool. It was so great to begin living the lifestyle and begin making new friends right away. And we had more than enough time later to unpack the car and get the house set up. Enjoy!!!

What MikeV said is soooooo true!
We are living it right now and could kick ourselves from having brought stuff we will never use... Part of the problem, though, was that Graebel, the movers, were too efficient and they packed EVERYTHING! So if you are gonna use professional movers , make sure you get rid of your excess stuff first. We have been here since July 13th and are still unpacking..... |

Although we did our own packing, we failed to get rid of enough stuff. Consequently, we've been unpacking since our stuff's arrival on 7/23 and still have tons of boxes left in the garage. Today, we are taking a few hours off and going swimming with our neighbor-the boxes will be there. So, my advice is to get rid of (thought we had, but not enough), take your time and don't forget to remember why you came here and take time to enjoy! |

Don't buy the water systems, they want to sell you. The system is not cheap and unnecessary. The two best places we found for contractor help was here and our neighbours. As many people said take your time and enjoy !

Take it slow and don't jump into doing a lot of things at first like adding downspouts, changing landscaping, painting your driveway, and putting in closet organizers. WAIT, because your neighbors and your new friends on this forum can direct you away from some major money mistakes.
If you brought too much stuff, Call Bargains and Treasures or Neerly New and they will take it off your hands and put some money into your pocket. Know that you will be visiting Home Depot and Lowes frequently, but if you want to just relax for a simple good meal, go to Toojays and then go to the square and have a drink and listen to the music for awhile and dance and talk to people. They will be so warm and helpful and welcoming. We are all here on this forum if you need us. This whole experience will be a brand new one, no matter how many times you have moved. I hope you find good friends, a lovely home and a joyful long time here with us in Lower Paradise! Welcome!
