Default When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens . . .

(The ending of the poem pleases its readers when the woman says . . .)

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Very cute poem, but if you are from Louisiana like am and love the L.S.U. tigers and Mardi Gras, you love and wear purple from Birth !!!! It is a beautiful color for all ages.

Well, I love that poem and hope to live as it says when "I am an old woman"! Actually I think I started adopting that attitude when I hit 50 - that magic year.

Have you heard of the Red Hat Society ? There are several chapters here in The Villages. The Society was started using this poem. The ladies all wear purple outfits and red hats. You originally had to be a 50 year old woman to join.

Send them here to Mobile, AL.
Most people don't know Mardi Gras was started here, not in New Orleans.
Ours is not as big and wild but more family oriented.
New Orleans does have more purple though!

I'll do just that. They love the warmer climates as well as Mardi Gras.
Will mention it the next time I see them.......as well as the fact that it originated in Mobile Alabama and not New Orleans. Thanks......

I was working in Mobile and happened on to their Mardi Gras. It was family oriented. I was amazed at the parades and how people were dressed for the balls. It was delightful.

My wife and I while at an awards conference spent some time with a couple from New Orleans who explained that there are two Mardi Gras's in New Orleans The one that is widely advertised at the French Quarter for tourist and then another for the families in the area.

Colorful, to say the least.

I truly love our Canadian neighbors to our north (of Vermont and Maine), however, if you want to see colorful houses, take a trip to Nova Scotia.

Coming back down the ocean coastal side, the homes are painted every color under the sun.........purple, blue, red, green, yellow......very bright and cheerful and different. The very nicest people live in Nova Scotia and also on Prince Edward Island, the Canadian Maritimes.

Wonderful trips every time we would go up there.........just a breath of fresh air and gorgeous scenery.
