Default Seaside Boardwalk Burning

For those of you with roots in New Jersey here is the latest from the shore. At 2:30 PM today a business at the southern end of the boardwalk caught fire. Driven by strong winds out of the southeast the fire has now consumed four blocks of the boardwalk and 32 businesses. After going on for 7 hours they are still fighting the blaze. There are 35 fire trucks and 400 firefighters battling the fire.

This event is not quite a year since Seaside Heights was devastated by Super Storm Sandy. Through a lot of hard work the boardwalk was rebuilt and opened for Memorial Day weekend. Now a section will once again have to be rebuilt.

My condo, which is on the boardwalk, is about 3/4 of a mile from the current fire location. Thankfully, it is doubtful that it will get to this location at the extreme north end.

I spent many a summer vacation in the area. I stopped by there last week and thought they made an amazing amount of progress after Sandy. It's absolutely heartbreaking to see what is happening now and how it impacts the people who run those businesses. Glad your condo is safe. I have some friends nearby too, but they are on the bayside and are ok.

I was stationed there in the coast guard. It is a shame.

Thank you for all of the above information. We've been following since the news broke yesterday........and just this morning CNN had early new reports showing that it's begun to rain......which is good for what remains of the fire.

How much more can you guys take down there. Tragic. Stay safe.

My mom lives 6 miles inland from Seaside Hights and I spent many days there when I was younger.

I went there last December to see had bad the storm damade was and even then could not get within one block of the beach. Lavalettte was almost completely destroyed and most of the rental units just off the shore were unrepairable.

I'll be up there again this December and will see what happened this time.

The early reports are that a Kohr's frozen custard stand started it. I love Kohr's. It makes Dairy Queen seem like water.

My older brother lives near Point Pleasant Beach........in Lakehurst, N.J. where the Hindenburg crashed....

My cousin Jean's son (a retired N.Y.C. police officer) lives in Point Pleasant Beach....not too far from Seaside.

We spent our teenaged years at Seaside Heights.......

Very sad news.......

Glad your friends' places are o.k. We know folks on Long Beach Island who had damage.....as well as many other shore communities up and down the Jersey coastline..........plus the folks we know slightly inland from the beach areas also had power outages and other problems....due to Sandy.

ditto for folks on Staten Island and northward....

Actually Kohr's had very minor damage from Sandy. The sand dune in front of them held during the storm.

great coverage of seaside fire here: https://www.facebook.com/JerseyShore...neNews?fref=ts
lots of personal reporting

senior - coast guard also has a station on the point pleasant side of the Manasquan inlet; not like the installation at cape may but sufficient for dilemmas between there and the next one north @ sandy hook!

Thanks......it's been a long time. Last time we were in Wildwood Crest was when our kids were about 11 and 13. Now they are 42 and 45. Even Wildwood has changed a lot, I've heard.........Wildwood Crest had a huge beach back then.........

just wondering if new wiring or not would have caused the fire...so hard to think about...how to start over or if to start over...of course if its in their blood there will be a next time

According to the reports and pictures I saw yesterday, it appears yes, but I cannot confirm.
