Default Concealed carry in The Villages

Yesterday on another thread about golf clubs being taken from an open garage, one poster said the best answer is "speak softly and carry." She also said that if she saw the crime occur, she would "ride the bumper of the car until police arrived." Do I assume she meant that she would chase the car and possibly fire a gun at it all in the attempt to get back golf clubs?

As I have said earlier, I do not see any sense in carrying a concealed pistol while in The Villages. There is no danger here that would invoke shooting at a person - is there?

Plenty of places in The Villages where a concealed pistol is illegal. Do the pistol packers always obey or do they voluntarily risk getting heavy fines?

It was Kitty Gilchrist who made those comments and I thought she meant them to be humorous.

Do we have to fight about guns all of the time? The Gun people and the non gun people aren't ever going to agree. The farmers and the cowboys can't be friends. The reds and blues will never see eye to eye. At our age these somewhat political or philosophical issues get WAAAAAY more important and touchy than they used to be.

Each side feels morally convinced on this subject. I used to be very non gun, but now am sliding over toward the center more. My sweetie who is a neutral on the subject says that if you take away guns, you only get them from the good guys. The bad guys will always find a way to get them.

I came from the central part of the country where the only guns I was familiar with belonged to hunters or policemen. Grew up in safe times and safe areas.

It doesn't do any good to argue about this issue, we all get so upset and there will be NO changing anyone's mind.

I feel safe here. If you have a gun, please don't point it at me. I am annoying but not dangerous.

I'd really like to know the last time that anyone personally knows a time where a gun they had on them came into play on the positive side. But to each his/her own.

As to Sweeties retort in Gracie's reply: Let's remember that "Suicides typically make up 56.5% of all gun deaths in according to the information available circa 2006 at Bureau Of Justice Statistics." Maybe we can agree that those guns were in the wrong hands? Maybe without a 'ready' gun some of these people, many of them under 20 years old, might be able to seek treatment.

The argument of course could be one which mirrored the shooting of congresswomen Giffords. A scenario like that could happen here.

It's a weak argument but I have heard it used before that a person carrying could have stopped it.

To me a place like the Villages would be a perfect place for someone to show up and start shooting. There is nothing stopping such from happening at one of our nightly entertainment at the squares.

Dear Buggyone, you don't know me, and your post putting violence with my name is upsetting and totally out of line. How in the world did you fantasize that I am a violent nut who would shoot someone like that? The violence happened in your mind only.

People who carry know where they can't carry: banks, federal and court buildings, bars, schools...your prejudice that people who carry are wildly irresponsible is misplaced.

Had I been the neighbor who witnessed the crime, I would have gotten in my car, called 911, follow until I could report their tag number and a description and then gone back to check on the neighbor. What would you have done?

gun discussions are like arguing about the dimensions of a passing cloud or whether the girrafe or the horse won the race on the merry go round!!!

No, I'm not joking. There are enough unhinged people running around who would pick up on your statement.

Most gun advocates think in unicen on other issues like gay rights, women's rights, minority rights and other issues that are very difficult to solve. I am again the exception to the rule as I am a gun owner and tend to lean liberal on other issues. I would be curious what chemical is in the brain of this group be it high or low that could cause a person to go so far in one direction or another. I have more concern about this group than I do about criminals or serial killers as aim more likely to come in contact with a distraught gun totter than a criminal.

However, lets just say we are all right and leave it at that.

I would assume there were armed guards at the highly secured navy shipyard? If there wasn't there should have been. Of course all our extra military armed guards are already spread thin fighting in wars that should have been over by now or never have been started in the first place.
