Default New meaning for "the family dog"

Are dogs really members of the family?

Emma (the boxer in the picture) and I rode up to Gainesville today to see my son Will, and his two dogs. When we arrived, Will petted Emma and said, "You need to be brushed. It's a good thing for you that mom brought you to see your brother (referring to himself)."

When we talk to our dog Ginger, we refer to each other as mommy and daddy. Such as, go to Daddy- he has a treat for you. I adore the way she turns her head whenever I talk yo her.
