Question gps for golf

I'm looking to purchase a GPS for myself and have come across many different brands, sizes etc. From a purely recreational standpoint and golfing primarily in the Villages (exec and Ch) what would be the most appropriate for distance, hazard location, flag, front and back of green etc? I would prefer a unit that I would not have to pay for updating annually.

Default Hi Whatever

We have had every GPS known to mankind and this IMHO is our list:

Skycaddie: Most require download, and annual fee....Lately I see that
they are keeping up with other brands....My husband has gone
to tee with 3 other owners of skycaddie and EVERYONE had a
different yardage and they pride themselves on being the most
accurate

Golf Buddy: I have the one that clips to visor, belt etc that requires NO
techie skills at all, go to tee, turn it on, wait for voice and
yardage delivered, perfect for me and one of the more
reasonable, think you can get it at any of pro-shops for
around $150...My husband has one that gives more info..

Bushnell: Has a hand held laser that is only accurate if your hands are
pretty steady and you can zero in on target..

I-Phone: Buy golf APP or purchase a Garmin

We have had others but the names elude me....Good luck and hit them
straight!

Garmin makes a great basic, center, front and back distances to green, free updates. Costs about $150, wears like a watch. Easy to use.

I just use golf logix. Its a free app for my iphone. Trouble with it is that it really drains the battery. My friends have the one that clips to your hat visor, and they like it. If you really need to know the distance to a sand trap or a distance to clear the water instead of the middle of the green, then you need a laser like Bushnell.

How accurate do you have to be? Do you know how far you'll usually land within 3yds, 5yds, 10yds? It matters.

Personally I use a laser range finder and couldn't be happier. It gives the yardage to the pin, distance to 150 marker, bunkers..anything you can bounce a laser off of it works. You learn to be steady unless you have a condition which prevents it then you should go with gps.

Golf buddy! I have the small one and world. Easy to use and no extra cost for almost any course. All I want is the front, middle and back of the green!

I have the SkyCaddie SC5. Bought the 3 year plan and it works out good for us as we golf in FL, Canada and in the UK.

My wife was the Garmin Approach watch and likes that too and there is no fee.

I have both GPS and Bushnell laser. Prefer the laser. Can't tell you how many times someone in my group will say "146 to the pin" using his GPS. I 'shoot' it with the laser and say "more like 154 to the actual pin". That's almost one club different for most golfers. At least I can't blame the yardage!!!
