Buggy, where did you get the idea of killing for the fun of it? Rural Floridians put meat in their freezer from the hunt. They eat squirrels, rabbits, fish, oysters, hogs and deer and it isn't an easy life.

The thread is titled "a slightly different adventure for visiting grandchildren".

That does not convey they are rural Floridians putting meat into their freezer because they do not have money to shop for groceries.

If someone needs to hunt or fish in order to eat, like my wife did when growing up in Iowa, no problem from me with it.

I personally am against killing for sport.

The airboat rides for grandkids would be great adventure.

I grew up in very rural NH. We hunted from the time I was old enough to lift a rifle. Deer, squirrel, rabbits, pheasant, just about anything you could cook. If we wanted meat on the table, you hunted. My grandmother always had a pot cooking on the wood stove and what ever I brought in got skinned, cleaned and added to the pot. We raised our own chickens and pigs and the occasional cow for food. Most were used for milking. Had our own gardens and canned everything unless it went into the root cellar. And hunted all year. But I actually think we ate better then, then we do today. Certainly more healthy. We were considered very poor by most standards, but we never went hungry.

I have to retract my comment that Buggyone had no grounds for the idea of gratuitous killing. The website DOES offer hunts to people who want that for an adventure, and like buggy, I couldn't do it and wouldn't enjoy it, but I understand those who do.
Fish and Wildlife Commission regulates hunting hopefully so that the balance of nature is as good as we can get. I think we have more gators than we need around here and God bless the gator hunters who have the nerve to do the killing. They are delicious by the way.

Just because hunting is called a "sport" does not mean that the activity is killing for the sake of killing. Serious hunters only hunt for meat and to control the population of wildlife. Without alligator hunts, golf in The Villages would be as dangerous as going out for a Sunday drive in your Range Rover in NYC.
