Hugely celebrated here...but just to be on the safe side, if I were you I would go down to the square right now and save a seat.

I had NOT realized until I moved here how much MORE the holiday is celebrated in the south. Costumes, a parade and King Cake...The squares will be hoppin.

As you know that date is Tuesday March 4th in 2014, BUT if my memory serves me, it was celebrated either the weekend before or the weekend after here in The Villages last year. Does anyone remember?

It was celebrated the weekend before Ash Wednesday. As said, Ash Wednesday is beginning of Lent.

FWIW:
Last year it was celebrated in the villages on Feb 7 - N.O. began the celebration on Feb 8th.

This year N.O. begins the celebration on Tuesday, Mar 4th

There will be two Mardi Gras celebrations this year. At Spanish Springs on February 6 and at Lake Sumter on February 11.

We (Aloha 'O Ka Hula) will be dancing at each of these.

Thank you, Gracie, but my wife, Violet, is the creative and artistic director of the hula troupe. I'm just the emcee/announcer (and carry the heavy stuff).

The Mardi Gras Celebrations at the Squares are always fun, and we hope that everyone on TOTV (especially you, Gracie) will come out and see us and give us a chance to meet you.

It is called Fasnacht by the Germans, not sure of the spelling and sometimes Shrove Tuesday? in liturgy?. I just read where U.K. people call it Pancake day?

When a lot of us fasted during lent, a LONG time ago, it was our big last hurrah for feasting.

If you dress up, you get to ski free on the slopes on Fasnacht in Germany.

What about Brownwood? Are we chopped liver? I love the dancing by Aloha 'O Ka Hula. We lived in Hawaii for 10 years, so the drive "north" to Lake Sumter will be well worth our time!

Mahalo nui loa for the kind words. Please come by after the performance and allow us to meet you in person.

No Mardi Gras Celebration was listed on the Special Events Calendar that was given us by the Entertainment Department. In fact, this is the first year that the Entertainment Department has scheduled two Mardi Gras celebrations. Possibly, they will see how the two celebrations are received by Village residents and expand to all three squares in future years as they have done with the Tree Lighting Celebrations. This is speculation on my part as I don't presume to speak for the Entertainment Department.
