well if the majority of the opinions here are counter to yours, maybe you should look in the mirror

Minnesota Vikings | Team Name Origin

Minnesota is a known hot spot of Scandinavian culture, and because of this the team's first GM, Bert Rose, chose the name Vikings to represent the many people of Minnesota and the surrounding area that could trace their heritage back to Scandinavia.

Mascots are chosen based on respect and honor. Not derision.
WOW! You completely miss the point. Yes Vikings (pirates) were of Scandinavian decent, but not all Scandinavians were Vikings (pirates). To use you analogy all German's were Nazis, and all Italians are mobsters.

On the other side the slang term "Indian" refers to ALL native Americans. There's the point....Indian is a slang term to define a total group of people based on their race.

I guess the government could pass a law making companies get permission before changing their names.

With all the actual issues, this is what people are mad/sad about!
People are mad/sad about this because it is just another example of the actual issues we are all experiencing in some way. Too bad that the vocal few can wield so much power. No the owners did not have an actual gun held to their head. In this day and age it isnt necessary.

You know it’s just a word & the word Indians isn’t going to make a difference in any bodies life. Did this get a name for someone. So what did the name change do by calling them “Guardians”, nothing so what happened by doing this? They’re still the “Indians”, Red Skins, Savages, True Americans. Can’t believe the name Indians really made a difference in a baseball team. It was just a word!

Who says I am?.....FYI my heritage is German and English. I have Native American relatives via marriage.
Also....seems you are very much OK defining a symbol of someone else's heritage as a toothy smiley face with a feather sticking out of the back of their head..........

Default Cleveland Indians name change

Cleveland Indians owners caved in so fast on this one....they should be renamed the Cleveland Wimps.
But....not all is lost! Notice that they retained one-half of the name for posterity.....In-DIANS are now the Guar-DIANS! Maybe this was some kind of subliminal protest.
Now....who is the next target of the PC police.......the Cleveland "Browns?"

Sorry that I find all the hubbub on both sides a bit silly and sad. Both sides have valid points of view basses on background and perspective, but imho it is not worth getting your knickers in a twist over. "A rose by any other name still smells as sweet." Regardless of name my favorite teams will still be my favorite teams.
Peace!

It didn't seem negative to me. I do not understand this at all. We grew up in very German Columbus, Ohio and we named our firstborn Gretchen. We chose the name because we felt the German heritage and yet some folks told us her name was too "dutchy".

I don't think they liked our choice. Her name brought to mind to us, the festivities where people wore dirndles and lederhosen and danced the polka and it brought to mind the dozens of families we knew with four syllable last names that were German and it reminded us of the German language we heard still at family gatherings. Our church; Evangelical and Reformed for one of us, was called German Lutheran back then. We had several family members who worked at one of the large breweries that were a solid part of the economics of the south end. Naming our daughter Gretchen was a way to say we belong to the tribe of German people who live this life in Columbus, Ohio.

I don't think if we saw a person of Irish or Italian descent wearing a dirndle to a costume party it would be anything but a compliment to our heritage. I just don't understand any of this. I have tried so hard to see it from the other side. I do not understand.

We Americans are a wonderful mixture of many cultures and ethnic groups. I can feel it very strongly here in The Villages.
