Just read this online. It appears the union that covers the workers at Belmont is using the race as a contract bargaining tool. Have been working without a contract and threaten to walk off the job.

Left rear has issue
The Villages Florida

Dennis O'Neill, brother of the horse’s trainer, said I’ll Have Another galloped Friday morning and after a veterinary scan, the tendon seemed "kind of tender."

"The horse is sound and happy, but it's not worth it," Dennis O'Neill told The Associated Press.

His value as a stud could have been about 40 million if he won, but it would still be 10-15million if he didn't race again.

Jimbo: Doug O'Neill says that the left front tendon is the problem - not a problem in the left rear. Just a slight correction. Great picture you have posted. Thanks for putting it up on site.

Jimbo: Nice photo above and even better You Tube video. Again, thanks for posting. A shame that the biggest race of the year has to be compromised this way but as you well know it's part of the game and obviously the right decision of owner and trainer. With the way the tendon looked this afternoon as he grazed outside of the barn, I'm now of the belief that there really was no option in whether to run or not run. He's got tendonitis period and no trainer would ever send a horse to the post under these conditions.

Larry Bramlege, the veteranarian for the Triple Crown

O'Neill said the chestnut colt had been a "little quiet" the last few days.
The injury was first noticed Thursday when the team noticed a loss of definition in his left front leg after he galloped.
After applying a special poultice, I'll Have Another was back to the track early Friday morning.

"We did just an easy gallop with him around the track and cooling out you could tell the swelling was back," O'Neill said after showing off the colt to the media at the press conference.

He said the injury was diagnosed the start of tendonitis in his left front tendon and that prompted the unanimous decision to
retire I'll Have another.

"It's far from tragic, but it is disappointing," O'Neill said.

"It's been an incredible ride and incredible run," he said. "I know we are going to be back here again. It's just a freakish thing.

After losing the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga last September, I'll Have Another took the rest of the year off with shin problems. Then after winning the Robert Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, the had another two months off leading up to the Santa Anita Derby, which he won April 12, before then taking the Kentucky Derby and Preakness to set up the Triple Crown bid.

They are themselves about 1200 lbs, the actual ground force concussion when doing 35-40mph is 10,000=12,000 lbs.

And the public wonders why a horse could develop tendonitis?? Jimbo2012's post should give you the final answer.
