Default Hole-in-one on a Par 4?

Ever done it?

I saw this article about a high school golfer who hit a hole-in-one on a 290 yard par 4 at Torrey Pines. They included the odds, 1 in 6 million (see photo).

Earlier this month a good friend and his 35 year old son visited for some winter golf. The young lad drove both the second and sixth holes of the Palms course at Hacienda Hills with a 5 wood. He came within inches of a hole in one on the sixth hole and tapped in for an eagle. So yes, it can be done.

The kid also hit a driver on the par 5 12th hole at Tierra Del Sol over the marsh, completely eliminating the dogleg left, and wound up in the middle of the fairway, 85 yards from the flag, for his second shot. Dam, youth is wasted on the young!

My dad as a 19yo had a hole in one on a par four. Pin placement front right of green 286 yards. He played everyday at the CC from age of 13 to 20, then three times a week once he returned from Korea, until his 80s. He was always capable of a long distance hitter, never owning a driver, but loved his one iron. While he came within inches, multiple times in his life, that was the only one to drop.

TDS doesn't have Black Tees.

Cutting off the dogleg on 12 isn't that great of a feat. Depending on your angle, it's about a 225-245 yard carry. I've hit driver, 8 iron into that Green from the Blue Tees (albeit, not intentionally).

Charles Reiter who's playing in the Houston Open this week, could hit a 3 Wood onto that Green, from the Golds.

Thanks, he had also mentioned hitting two par 4 greens on HH, but of course you are correct on TDS and I agree, cutting off that dogleg isn't the biggest deal. But there are ample opportunities to get waylaid if you get too aggressive (and struggle with accuracy).

4 Iron off the tee, around the tree.

3 Wood to 60 yards.

Flip Wedge to the Green ... tap it in.

Or ...

Hit a Driver into the woods. Take a drop. Punch out too far. Punch up again, because the trees on the left, block your way to the Green. 7 iron into right front Bunker. Blade it across the green. Chip it back. 2 putts. Mark down 9. Avoided double-digits.

When you say only one to drop, do mean that was his only hole in one? Or only hole in one on a par 4 to drop?

Yes - a 280 yd hole.
I was in my early 40’s at the time and didn’t see it go in. 2 holes later was a couple of inches away from having another on a par 3. Don’t ask about the other 16 holes.
But that is nothing compared to the Brit who has a house in TV who in his eighties, last year while there, had his 29th.

Only one par four hole in one. Dad was a scratch golfer, until his 60s.
He was old school, hole in one’s on par three’s not memorable to him. I have news articles from different tournaments, for 4 par 3 hole in one, and countless par 4 eagles.

Etiquette was drilled into my brain when he taught me the game. I also had the ability of long distance, and still love my irons, no hybrids. To be honest I play golf, but it’s unimportant for me.

Dads mindset for hole in one. They are mostly luck with some skill involved. Years after I read his accomplishments in the newspaper articles my mom saved, he rarely talked about them on the course or the dinner table.

Fake News. Real hole in ones occur on pitch and putt courses, Executive Courses and putting courses in The Villages!

My son (who played golf at a professional level), got his first hole in one on a 354 yard par 4 in a tournament here in Florida several years ago. I witnessed one of his college team mates get one on a par 4 in a college tournament. So yes, it can be done.

Here in The Villages it should be a much easier task due to the number of short par 4's and the fact that there is generally no protection in the front of the greens.
