Default Science Fiction Book Recommendation Please

I just need a sci fi fix. Something involving space travel would be good, but any sci fi topic is good as long as it's a good read! If if was the first book of a good series that would be extra good!

Try Jack McDevitt. You can look him up on Wikipedia. He has quite a few novels that involve the character Alex Benedict with A Talent For War being the first in the series. My favorite book by him is probably The Engines of God and revolves around another character Priscilla Hutchins who appears in a number of his books.

For sci fi humor, Douglas Adams is awesome. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the first in his famous series.

For super-complex, heady, incredibly long, multi-threaded stuff, Neil Stephenson is the ticket. Be forewarned - he is a genius and doesn't think like normal people think, and his plots can be difficult to follow. I'm currently in the last half of "Reamde," which is over 1000 pages long. I've been working on it for over a month. Definitely not light reading.

For classic futuristic socio-science fiction, Robert Heinlein - anything he writes, but especially the Lazarus Long books (which can be read in any order) and one of the most famous sci-fi books in history, Stranger in a Strange Land. I've read every book and short story he's written, including his letters to his publisher, collected and published by his wife, after his death.

I will always put in a vote for Isaac Asimov Foundation books on this topic. If you've read them, then any other books by Asimov would also prove to be good reads.

Piers Anthony, though known more for fantasy, does some good sci-fi as well. Maybe Bio of a Space Tyrant series.

I will also second the vote for humor in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Also good for humor in the genre is Phule's Company and subsequent books by Robert Aspirin (on the fantasy side, his Myth Inc. books are hysterical).

I also enjoy some books in the Star Wars universe. I particularly enjoyed the Darth Bane trilogy by Drew Karpyshyn

Either would be welcome. But I’m reasonably familiar with the classics, so something new would be very welcome.

I've enjoyed Childhood's End by A. Clarke.

More generally, if you Google Best Sci-fi novels you will get several lists.

Default classics vs modern

I've tried some of the newer writings. I prefer the classics. Although I have read about 10 newer books, I really can't recommend any of them. Lot's of good suggestions above about classics. If you see something you haven't read yet, go for it.
