The Monuments Men - Rotten Tomatoes
Was really looking forward to this movie but the reviews sure are not very good. The book by Robert M. Edsel was quite good. Has any TOTVer seen this WWII movie yet? Robert M. Edsel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia |

Saw it last night and I would agree with the review. Good story but the acting was sub par for the number of stars that was in the film.

Saw it yesterday in the third row (won't do that again) because that was what was available. Packed theatre. I don't know that you can say the acting was subpar because you really don't expect "acting" from Clooney and Matt Damon who are always the same..although they both add that "charm" element. Cate Blanchett was the best. I so completely believed she was french. It isn't a big movie but it was enjoyable with a little history lesson.

I saw it last night. Funny what shcisamax said above about Clooney. I was thinking while watching the movie I was watching Oceans 11. He was the EXACT same just wearing different clothes
![]() I thought it was OK, I had seen the Rotten Tomatoes reviews so didn't have high expectations ( I went with my boys, they couldn't be talked out of it ). I personally would give it a C+/B-. There's really little to no action and very little humor. An interesting story (in that it was based on a true story) but it just never really seemed to take off. The best part for me was seeing the real pictures at the end of the movie as the credits rolled. Not sure this is movie theater worthy. It's not like seeing it on the big screen added anything to the movie. I'd probably wait to see it at home…..or maybe not at all ![]() |

Saw it last night and was disappointed. Not much humor, lacks in script...very plain and ho-hum. Very little dialogue considering the cast. Then again, I can't remember the last time I saw Clooney in a movie that was good. Cate Blanchett was the only actor who actually gave a good performance. Even John Goodman had little to offer. Wait til' it comes on television. You'll find more action watching the Olympics.

Begging to differ. The telling of a true-ish story I never heard about WWII was a fascination. Bill Murray also delivered some great moments, in addition to Blanchett. Clooney wrote, directed and starred. I thought he did a much better job of writing and directing than he does acting. I enjoyed him in "O brother..."
There is a symbolic juxtaposition of Hitler's devilish intent to kill, steal and destroy what God cherishes most versus the heroes' search for the stolen Madonna and child, who came for the opposite reasons. I enjoyed the story, the costumes, the sound track, the art, some of the acting, and I especially appreciated an all Clooney creation where the big romance is between men and art. |

My rule of thumb
If a movie is heavily advertised on Tv, and this one was , It is probably marginal at best. This in my experience is almost universally true. It appears that the makers have decided that such movies are due for bad acceptance after the first few days of showings and are trying to entice early viewers before word of mouth kills it. Haven't seen this one yet but these posts are beginning to affirm my premise. JMHO

My husband and I saw this last night in a theater with new stadium seats that were fantastic. We loved the movie. I thought it was the movie we enjoyed and had no idea that it wasn't good until I saw all the terrible reviews. Perhaps we just loved the comfy new seats <wink>.

I saw the movie today and loved it. Parts even made me fill up a bit. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it to be a feel good movie about something I did not know but have learned is based on fact. As for the critics, the only opinion I follow is mine.

Saw it at the Realto yesterday. Had to sit too close for comfort, so that influenced the enjoyment. Interesting story, but it played a little too much like a typical "let's get the old gang together and show these young whippersnappers we've still got what it takes" formula for my taste. Hard to take Bill Murray and John Goodman seriously, and Matt Damon, and George Clooney were going through the motions IMHO. As others have said, Blanchett was the best of a mediocre lot. Overall, mildly disappointing.
