The Shootist. Most of John Wayne’s movies portrayed him as something larger than life. The Shootist portrayed him as a human being facing what we all must face, in the best way possible. It showed Wayne’s range and depth as an actor better than just about any other of his movies that I can recall seeing.

Another vote for The Shootist for your reasons. Art imitating life.

Don’t cheat but how many movies was John Wayne killed in and who was the only notable star that killed him.

Default Favorite John Wayne Movie?

I am surprised no one mentioned True Grit, the only movie in which John Wayne won an Oscar.
