I don't know how I missed seeing Lonesome Dove for so many years! For the first time, I finally watched it last year on recommendation from our Canadian friends. Wow! What a great production.

Default On our Top 10 List

Great movie & great actors (Duval is one of our favorites also). One of those movies I could watch many times.

I read Lonesome Dove when it was new and immediately decided that it, and not Gone With the Wind, is The Great American Novel. I still think so. The movie was fantastic.
By the way, the book has a prequel and a sequel. Larry McMurtry is a terrific writer.

Glad you mentioned Lonesome Dove. It is time for me to put in my Netflix queue again. Great casting but they killed off Danny Glover too soon. He had a great role and played it with perfection.

When you read McMurtry, you have to accept the fact that he's going to kill off some of your favorite characters. Lonesome Dove is a great yarn, and Duvall & Co. really bring those characters to life, especially the character of Gus McCrae. I've read the novel several times now, and it still is an adventure. And there's never been a better mini-series either, IMHO.

Agree it is one of the best mini series ever produced.
Books and movies do not always translate well but this did.
Felt the same about To Kill a Mockingbird.
Only two in a lifetime, IMHO, that says a lot.

Duval was excellent in Lonesome Dove but I thought he was even better in Open Range which I also think edged out Lonesome Dove as the better movie.

Lonesome Dove is my favorite movie. I've seen it several times. Robert Duvall was at his very best.
