The Martian-- I bought the book online from Barnes and Noble but have not started it yet. I often like to see the movie, then read the book, and later see the movie on DVD. |

Mission to Mars*(2000) - Rotten Tomatoes
I remember that one as well as Red Planet which came out the same year of 2000. Red Planet (2000) - Rotten Tomatoes |

Really liked The Martian. It seemed to be calling to me in a way to see it as soon as possible.

Both Mission to Mars and Red Planet had more conventional scifi twists (Helpful robot goes psycho! Godlike aliens seeded life in the solar system!) and the tension all seemed to come from rotten luck. The science in both was weak, weak, weak. Then science in The Martian, while not bullet-proof, was far, far more accurate. And the tension came from the realistic dangers and stress of fighting to stay alive on Mars. The Martian was also funnier, better written, better directed and had far better cinematography. If you enjoyed it, read the book as well. While the movie was very faithful to it, the book lets you go deeper into the story. Both were very enjoyable. To be honest though, I am a long-time, major sci-fi buff, a space nerd, a computer professional and have a snarky sense of humor. The Martian was basically made for me.

I saw The Martian in 3D at Brownwood and really enjoyed the film. It's a realistic type film similar to Gravity, which I also saw in 3D, nothing like the Alien franchise movies. Here you're dealing with the real world and it's pitfalls.

I saw The Martian in 3D, and I enjoyed it quite a bit even though I'm not a huge science fiction fan. Matt Damon will probably get an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of an astronaut stranded on Mars and his efforts to survive the harsh environment of Mars long enough to be rescued.
