We just saw the best movie...Lone Survivor. Very intense and also a true story. The real Navy Seal was on Dateline a few months ago who was the survivor portrayed in this movie.

I am about 2/3s through the book of the same name. It is interesting but spends a lot of time on Luttrell's SEAL training, boyhood and other subjects.

I will have to see what the movie covers after I am done with the book.

I think by reading the book first, you get a better perspective and understanding what a Navy Seal REALLY goes through. In the movie, they don't tell or show you that much about training, like the book does. Very emotional movie!! Hats off to the Navy Seals!!

The book is very enlightening about the physical and emotional demands of being a Navy SEAL. I did finally finish the book. Now to see the movie some time.

The movie really loses a lot of its impact if you have read the book first because of just how many things are changed from the book which is based on facts to the movie. The movie's plot's direction seems motivated more by some kind of John Wayne The Green Berets like take on the military and their role in global affairs as well as a simplistic view of life in Afghanistan.

We tried to see the movie yesterday in Brownwood but when we got there the line for the ticket booth was around the corner and down the street. Being a cold rainy day I guess golfers and pickleball players etc were looking for alternative entertainment. We will try it again Saturday.

We went to the 1:30 show today of August: Osage County at LSL and when we arrived at 12:55 there was 3 ticket lines all the way out to the curb in the rain. When we finally got into the theater it was packed.

We saw the movie today and really enjoyed it. From reading other posts I've decieded to buy the book because I enjoy reading about the Seals training.
True or based on facts movies appeal to me.
For those that also enjoy these things I can highly recommend the book "Inside Delta Force"

Extraordinary movie with some changes made to Hollywood-ize it. (see Lone Survivor - film/ Wikipedia). Whether one agrees or disagrees where we should be in the world, it's a true story of dedication to the mission, to country and to oneself. I will warn you I/we found it quite emotional at the end of them film. Even for as long as the film has been out, it looks like it is still packing the Barnstorm theater at least at yesterday's 115 show. There were some principals in this film that put their money where their mouth was in order to get this film made namely the director, Peter Berg and the lead Mark Wahlburg. Although the brutality of war shows in this film, it is one NOT to be missed.

The USAF has what is known as CSAR, Combat Search And Rescue. The unit that was depicted in the movie is based in Florida, interesting take on the movie and what actually occurred.

I saw 'Lone Survivor' this afternoon. At first I thought I made a bad decision in seeing the film, I'm lost interest in recent years in watching war movies and the first 45 minutes seem to drag. That one scene that stood out was a rookie soldier had to perform the Napolean Dynamite dance with music and all, and he did it perfectly, I know because I've seen that film at least 20 times. The hazing reminded me of another war movie 'Jarhead' which I've seen a few times and liked as well. However, with all the hype I was expecting the first half of 'Full Metal Jacket' and we got the first half of 'Zero Dark Thirty' instead, but the setup was necessary just like in that film.

After the first 45 minutes the film really kicked into gear and the tempo really changed, it became a full blown action movie. Better than most because what happened here was true for the most part. A long continuous fire fight with the Americas picking off Taliban one by one and the Army guys would get nicked but didn't go down, and were extremely outnumbered.

After the last scene of the movie the fellow in the row in front of me bolted from his seat, and unfortunately for him he missed a big part of the film. The song 'Heroes' by David Bowie is my all time favorite song, you can ask my wife. Well, Peter Gabriel sings an emotionally filled version of 'Heroes' at an extremely slow pace while photos of the actual 19 or about, soldiers are shown on the screen. This goes on for about 4 or 5 minutes and no one else left the theater.

You should check out the Extras in the DVD of Lone Survivor . They have short interviews with some of the family members of the 3 Navy Seals killed in this intense fire fight as well as with the actors who played them.

There is also a short segment on the men who went down with the helicopter.
