Oppenheimer (2023).
Oppenheimer - Rotten Tomatoes
Missed seeing this one on the big screen but am enjoying it on the smaller one. Best movie I have seen so far in 2023. |

I have not seen it. Friends have told me the first half was great, the second tedious and even boring.
As an aside one of my aunts was an army nurse assigned to Los Alamos as the school nurse there during the Manhattan project. She told some stories about what it was like. When I was a staff member there during the 1970s and 1980s I knew a few men who had been on the Manhattan Project and heard some amazing stories. Oppenheimer started a colloquium that continued through the years I worked at LASL (LANL in later years).

I purchased the movie last week for $19.99. I fell asleep about half way through it. It seemed very boring to me and confusing because of the flashbacks and flashforwards, which I never like in a movie. I still have not gotten around to watching the second half.

I think Robert Downey deserves an Academy Award for his performance. It was a fine movie, despite the flashbacks, except that it left a lot of people, and situations, out of the movie. Maybe it’s because it was three hours long as it was. All in all, it was time well spent.

Well, they tried to gloss over it, but if you put 2 + 2 together, you quickly realize how it is that the Soviet Union -- a country barely able to feed itself, totally reliant on lend-lease American arms to save itself from Stalin's pact with Hitler -- managed to build their own Bomb 4 years later. It is a historical fact that the project was run by a communist and shot through with soviet agents. It's a wonder they didn't beat us to it.
But I was very impressed that Hollyweird allowed any mention of that fact into the story. I enjoyed the movie, and I hope the image of that detonation gets seared into the brain of every human on Earth. I just wish there was some way to make them realize that bomb was a firecracker compared to any nuclear device ever assembled since then. |
