Default Carl Hiaasen's "Bad Monkey" on Apple TV

Carl Hiaasen is one of my favorite writers. His books are always set in Florida and perfect at capturing the crazy. The satire is wicked funny.

(He also writes books for kids. Middle school age would be about right for those. One of them won the Newbery Award which is a big deal.)

Anyway, Bad Monkey is now on Apple TV. There are a few episodes left to drop.

If Carl Hiaasen sounds good to you, just look at his website which I am linking here. (I don't want to type anymore tonight. I am going to go now and catch up on Bad Monkey.)

Here ya go....

Enjoying Bad Monkey. But as usual, the book is better! Fun to pick out familiar places in the Keys.

They made a TV show out of a Carl Hiaasen novel? This I have to see!

I had never heard of Carl Hiaasen until he was mentioned in the Frazz comic strip by Jeff Mallett. Out of curiosity, I picked up one at my local library and have been hooked ever since. He is a brilliant, savage, hilarious, nasty novelist who eviscerates his antagonists. His adult novels (the ones with two-word titles) are great and his young adult novels (the ones with one-word titles) are surprisingly good. If you haven't started reading them already, I envy you as I would love to read them all again for the first time!

I thought his name sounded familiar. He wrote the book Team Rodent about the Disney regime.

And word has it Razor Girl will be next.

Bill Lawrence is in this with Hiaasen. Lawrence is the guy who created Ted Lasso and also Shrinking — which will return soon with Season 2 and Harrison Ford back as the old shrink.

Carl Hiassen writes what I call Comic Crime Capers: not so much detective novels as novels about would-be criminals who are too dumb to breathe. They are set in Florida because that’s the way it is in Florida. I don’t get AppleTV, so I haven’t seen Bad Monkey, but I wish all his novels became extended series like that. If you like to fish, read his novel “Double Whammy,” which is about bass fishing in Lake County. There are places you will recognize.

The other great Florida writer of Comic Crime Capers is Tim Dorsey, who died this year. His main character is the young likable psycho-killer Serge Storms. When he’s not killing people who deserve it in amusing ways, he travels around the state taking photos of Historical Monuments. His goal is to visit every one in Florida. There are thousands.

Yes...Bad Monkey is great fun. I will have to try the author's books next. And, while we're dropping the names of other novelists penning Florida based book series, you really should check out Paul Levine. His Solomon & Lord, and Lassiter book series are extremely good. Both series center on Miami based lawyers, with solid storytelling and an absolutely addictive sense of humor. Most of his books are available on Amazon.

I watch it, but Vince Vaughn's rapid fire one liners get old after awhile.

He's one of my favorite writers, have read most of his books. The first one I ever read was Tourist Season, I laughed out loud reading it.... funniest book ever written. I think Sick Puppy was my favorite, best ending ever.

Sounds like that popular TV show from a few years ago, "Dexter."

How have I never heard of Dorsey!? Thanks! Listened to all the Hiaasen and John D. McDonald books on tape back when I was driving to Florida to dive or play old man tennis tournaments. Just checked and there's tons of his audiobooks available from my Libby public library source! Guess I'll need an excuse for a driving trip. Not that big on monuments. . . :-)

Cool! Libby has five of his audiobooks, too!
